This is not a question or comment about being able to afford a Blu-ray title. It is about how justify a purchase given the specific title. For instance, for a single title movie (e.g. Star Trek, District 9, (500) Days of Summer, etc.) my buying philosophy (or principal) is to get it for $20 or less. If it is an older title movie in the aforementioned exampled light, I shoot for even less.
I think I have done a good job with this mental approach. The cheapest BD I 'purchased' was $7.99. The wife and I have learned to be patient, and take the opportunity that presents itself when we are aware of it. Sure, we've missed some good offers, and this usually leads us to waiting longer--but we are ok with that.
For titles like television series (e.g. Chuck, Pushing Daisies, Fringe) we try to keep it as much under $40 per season. I refuse to sleep at night knowing that they want $70 or a lot more for a season of Star Trek: The Original Series. Who are they kidding? So, i wonder if the wife and I are the only ones like this, or are there others that will buy at a higher cost.
BTW, the buying of Blu-ray is almost exclusively Amazon. I'd consider their Prime offering, but the 2-day per BD is about $3 and I'd have to buy >26 titles just to break even. Ok, how are all of you getting you BD fix on?
Edit: I am thinking of buying a movie on HD DVD is I can find it at a reasonable price. Its not available on BD and it is one I've wanted to get for some time. How strange is that!?!

I buy BD just like you do, Wan: On sale, reduced, very rarely over $20, usually less, and almost always from Amazon. I've cut my buying way down from my DVD days, though... I probably only buy 1-2 movies/month - just the major keepers. We rent a lot, though.
Re: Prime... FYI, you can share an account with immediate family. I don't know if you have a parent or a sibling that you could share with, but my Dad and I share a Prime account... We each place several Amazon orders each month, so we can easily get ahead... Especially if you need stuff fast, since you can get the next-day shipping for $3.99/item. It's pretty cool to be able to order a lens at 2:00pm, and UPS or FedEx is showing up with at at 11am the next day... For $3.99.
I love Amazon.

I wont pay more than 20.

I buy BD used, scratch, and dent, or new if they're really on sale. The most I've ever paid for a new title is $15, and I rarely spend more than $10 on a used title.
But I don't buy many as I'll rarely watch a movie more than one time, I rent for the most part, I think I might own ~7 BD, and ~30 HD-DVD most of which I bought new for $6-$8.

An acquaintance of mine was buying his BD's at a local pawn shop for about $5. I don't have a pawn shop nearby, or I'd try the same. Being in a bigger city, they'll probably want too much for them, but for some of you, I thought I'd mention it.

i buy the keepers on blu. i've been at best buy looking around and was floored at how much BD was there compared to amazon and walmart. i enjoyed 9 but not for 30 bucks. price plays a huge roll in what and where i buy. one other thing on tv series if they can sell a box set for 25 a season why not sell the individual years for the same instead of gouging 1.5 to 2 times the amount?

If I really want it, I'll spend up to $30. Though I'm usually under $20.
My blu-ray purchases will be less than my DVD purchases where. I have 100+ DVDs. Some we've only watched once. A few we've never watched yet. For blu-ray, it will only titles we will watch more than once a decade.
I don't buy DVDs any more. Unless they come with the blu-ray. For movies my kids would want, I try for the blu-ray/dvd combo pack. They'll watch them on their portable DVD players or the PC.
I've never brought TV series. They just don't have the rewatching potential for me. My wife got me Stargate season 1 and I haven't even finished it.
