1st the HDFury1 was like $99, now the Fury3 is $299
Same for all the other manufacturers, moome etc.
Essentially they are the same as before with newer chips. But those newer chips are probably the same price as the older ones were in their time. Electronics get cheaper for everything but this it seems.
With very decent digitals dropping in price faster than a fat lady on a cake, it makes replacing my current moome one pointless, no matter how much I'd like.
Stick with the HTPC, until the basement is redone then get a digital. Shame, but the math does not add up anymore.
Thoughts guys?.......

My thoughts? You're crazy!
A) The old HD Fury is still $99.
B) The old Fury was DVI and RGB only
C) The HD Fury 2 added HDMI 1.2, component, audio, better analog section
D) The HD Fury 3 added HDMI 1.3, deep color, better audio, better analog
We have better gear and are getting more out of CRT projectors than we ever could before and have awesome PQ to show for it. R&D costs money. Do you expect HKmod and Moome to work for free?
If you want be cheap, stick with the old stuff. I don't understand the logic expressed I your "I'm gonna have to switch to digital" whine, either; it makes no sense. You don't want to spend $300 on a new HD Fury, so you'll be forced to buy a new $1500 low-end digital. Are you serious?

Wow, straight to personal attacks.
The new features come with the new chipsets, which are no more expensive today than before IMHO.
Today a new 50" Plasma is 1/3 what it was in 2006, but with many more features and better resolution. Following your logic it should be 3x the price.
New features don't usually increase the price of electronics, but maintain competitiveness.
Also, the transcoders are now more costly then the display devices themselves. Akin to paying more for the tires on the car, than the car.
As for R&D, the basic design has not changed, just the chipsets, which are developed for mass applications by large corporations. None of the transcoder manufactures have really invested much in R&D that's bunk. most of the spend in the last 36 months has been on the marketing side.
The logic is, that CRT is worthwhile at a very low price point because of the quirkiness and downsides to the displays. But when you start adding $400 cards in it no longer does. A $1500 Digital offers way more value at that point. No cards neeed, no scalers, no mods, hush boxes or anythign else.
Don't get me wrong, I love my XG, but investing $400 in it right now makes no sense to me, but for many others it does I am sure. I just feel the prices are gouging now, and getting silly

That's really the main reason I've always stuck with an HTPC. I bought a Gen 1 Moome DVI card for my NEC to use with my HD-DVD player, it never worked right...and we all know what happened to HD-DVD....I said never again. I too question the value...But it's really up to the individual to decide.

Hi Mike,
yes I have one of those, have to pull it in and out to get HDCP to work.
I gave up and went back to my HTPC. A digital gets rid of all of these issues that affect I'm afraid

Umm the new moome HDMI input card kicks the old ones ass hands down!,, thats all I have to say.. no I lied and I paid the same for the New one that the first version HDMI Moome Vim card. That card was 750 for two when i bought it 06/13/07, the new cards I paid 750 for two on 10/1/09! So how do you figure they went up? I got the pre order price for both so if you snooze you loose.

I would agree...I can't imagine paying $299 for a tcoder.
I got the HDFury GE and it works fine.
Not going to be sinking any more money into CRT except for repairs and that will be limited to a few hundred if it is easy.
I think most are thinking this way that is why the prices are going up.
If they plan to sell less than 1,000 units the price must go up...if they sell more than 10,000 the price goes way down. That is what I think is happening.

Wow, thinking the same thing.
Though to be fair, the PJ was worth a hack of a lot more back then. But investing that type of money now would seem a more difficult decision.

See thats where it differs for me than for you guys, I really really love this Hobby and don't care how much the CRT stuff costs to keep them going. Why am I blending? Cause I love the challenge. I could have easily not got the moome cards since I have the MUX and went RGBHV out. But the new moome card looks that much better than RGBHV. The added color depth is outstanding. And My two 2004 Longbows were less than 2100 for both. Who knows, I might build a HTPC for blending too, just for the sake of the hobby. Will i have to spend money on it? for sure, will i bitch on this forum how come I had to spend money to do it? NO!
I look at it in the value of what it would cost to get the same quality now as the equipment was back then, so for example back then the best pic quality was CRT, but it also cost close to 30k for a good CRT projector. So fast forward to present, the best pic quality now out of a digital might be the top of the line barco digital set, 100K or more, sorry guys I will stick with my 7k set up, two 35k PJs for 2.1k is not a bad deal and to add a 375 buck HDMI card to a 35k pj is peanuts.

Well put! I just spend $550 ($300 for block $250 for shipping) for a bare block with the right casting number and date code for my 1965 Corvette....Most people would think I was crazy for that.

Thta's not crazy, it makes total sense.
Athanasios, no one insulted anyone, except the personal attack on me after my OP.
P.s I did use a PC to blend once, it worked pretty well, but I did use a cheap external unit to do the blend piece, and the PC to do the overlap. Was quite cool at the time

Sorry bad day for me i guess, But honestly the New moome card is really something else, I have no HD fury experience.

If you wish to do a correct restoration it will be money well spent. I found a 67 427 convertable that is a basket case. The meathead blew the motor and tossed it. There is a small block sitting on the ground to go in it but he'll never finish it.
Do you know what a top notch all original 67 427 vette is worth? I would pay thousands for a numbers matching engine for it and consider my self lucky.

Personal attack? Because I said you were crazy? What, did you think I literally thought you were legally insane?
Lighten up. You solicited opinions, and I gave it. In a hobby where you can easily spend thousands (or tens of thousands) without even trying, I don't see how $300 is of some grave concern. You have your opinion, I have mine. No offense was intended. Anybody who spends any time here knows I don't make "personal attacks" on people.
