So I was chatting with Walter Allen today and the subject of IC-11 and IC-12 on the OSD, wave form, blanking board came up. He told me that those parts are only installed on projectors with the "Intensity modulation" option installed and if I were not using the option, any X600 convergence tray assembly "should" work.

I bet thats like the Contrast Modulation Board on the Marquee to increase output at the corners and edges.

I don't know where you heard that. I've never been aware of anything of that nature. I have a standard red c-element in my 4600HD that has perfect focus. I have two greens, both in AmPro housings. One from a Marquee and one original to a 4600. They both seem to focus the same.
The only place I see optical focus out of whack is the bottom corners on a 4:3 screen and those areas extend up about 4 inches from the bottom and about 6-8 inches from the side. I use a 4:3 screen and when I input a HD aspect ratio, the bottom corners are well above the areas that will not dial in correctly in a 4:3 aspect ratio. If the projector is set up correctly and the electronic focus balance control is optimized, the limitation of AmPro's LC's is of no issue. |
I've done it. Pulled a green C element out of an AmPro (it's been a while but I think it was a 4000 with Sony tubes) and put it into a Marquee chamber. Focus was WAY off. I could get the center, OR the edges, but not even come CLOSE to getting both at once.
I pulled that C element out and put in one that was made for a Marquee and of course everything was just fine.
I did note that the AmPro C element I used had a wider flange (smaller lens area) than the ones used in a Marquee. Perhaps that wider flange type was specific to only certain models of AmPros? I don't really know. But I do know that
in my experience, wide flange C elements taken from AmPros won't focus in a Marquee. It isn't even CLOSE to being right.

On the LCPs, why would VDC sell and install them if they could only do 720p? |
Greg is just full of it, quite frankly. I recall quite clearly that when I did my FrankenYoke Mark 1 experiments on a lowly
8000 (but with a 02p VIM and rev 7 neck card) that I was able to resolve 2048x2048 (in 4:3 mode) with a very acceptable
MTF in the central area of the EIGHT inch tube. That's the same as running QXGA (2048x1536) in 16:9 mode.
Though I couldn't actually measure the MTF as I lack that equipment, to the eye the alternating black and white (green, actually, as I used a green tube) were very distinctly delineated. There was black between the green, and plenty of it.
When I switched to a test pattern that alternated 50 percent white and 100 percent white lines, instead of white..black..white
it was white...grey...white...I could still see the difference. It didn't blend. The scan lines were not overlapping. If you had
the patience, you could have counted the scan lines.
For the final test, going to a full white screen, at reduced contrast values, scan lines were visible. Not just barely,
but actually quite noticeable.
Yeah, if an 8" tube can resolve that, with the right focusing system, you bet that an LCP can resolve it!
Greg wants to sell stuff. That's fine. But for him to sell stuff to you, he has to get you thinking that you need what
he has. So take what he says with a grain of salt. Maybe even two grains.

Sorry I haven't been around much lately. Been working like a dog. Add to that, I'm doing over the living room, replacing the old TV with a new LG 1080P flatscreen with a recessed articulating mount. This involved opening up the wall as there was not anything suitable to bolt to in the exact location SHE wanted it. All source equipment other than game consoles have been re-located and wired to the rack room along with the installation of a Sony 400 disc BD player. Now with all this equipment being relocated, obviously there is the need to control it. More Crestron equipment, control wiring and programming. Everything in the living room will be controlled via a Crestron 10.4" table top touch panel. Only the dedicated game remotes will be left behind. I'm now down to paint and programming.
As for the Thomas tubes, they have been running like a champ for over a month and that means 12+ hours a day in my house
