Just a quick one, in the 1272 installation manual it states various applications and screen sizes and there corresponding setup instructions.

Are these sizes given in diagonal or width?

(So where it says for example, to change spacers to L for screens between 140" and 300").

Its given in the Diagonal screen Size, But there is now way Even A G90 is going to light up A 300" screen to minimum recommended 9fl..

With your 1272 I wouldnt go much bigger than 92" with A 1.3Gain screen, even then if your lucky it would prob be at the minimum recomended light output of 9fl for front projection...

Cheers...

Thanks mate! I wouldn't dream of using one of these for a 300" screen! That is almost like a commercial cinema screen!

92" is a bit small for me in my room. My current screen is 105" with just a white painted wall and it's plenty bright!
I tested the setup running at about 150"-160" and this is what it looks like on a plain white wall ...

Not bad at all. Excuse the dodgy camera quality, was on a mobile phone. But yeah, lit up the room nicely and was sharper than my 105" at the moment (because i'm not using all of the raster at the moment). Only issue was that i was maxing out the electronic controls (was just a test), so gotta change the spacers on the CRT/Lenses. I managed to find a brand new set of Large CRT spacers too!

So yeah my next screen, which ill start soon, will be a 150-160" 1.78:1 screen. I'll actually build it wider, about 4m or so in 2.35:1 format, but i will mask it down for use with this projector, until i change over to something else in the future, and then i won't have to rebuild my screen wall again.

I found with my 1252 anything over 7 feet wide the picture looses the "punch" I have to drive the projector really hard and it just looks washed out. Try experimenting with the screen sizes. 4m wide is too large for a 1272.

What contrast setting do you run your projector at?

Don't forget it depends a lot on the screen gain, Jeremy... I had my 1271 set up on a 96" wide (110 diag) WilsonArt screen. I don't remember what you're running for a screen, but let's say for instance you were using blackout cloth, which is close to .9 gain. You might have had about 8fL at your smaller screen size, while I'd have 9 fL at my larger screen size because of the much higher gain.

Now... That said, my 8'-wide DW screen is about as big as I would have gone with 1.3 gain, or maybe just a tad bigger. 4m (13ft) is WAY too big. You're going to be down in the 3fL ballpark, which IMHO will look like total crap. It might look neat for about a week while you're excited about the size, then the more you watch it, the more it will look dim, washed out, and lifeless.

The 12xx's aren't the sharpest machines, either - so they benefit from a smaller screen size in that regard, too.

Kurt, how big is you room and how much seating are you planning? A 4m wide screen is huge. Check out Art Sonneborne's theater... he has a 14' wide scope setup, and has seating for 13 in a huge room. He's using a ~$50,000 MSRP projector to light up a screen that size.

Thanks for the input guys!

AnalogRocks - I run the contrast at "Max" and the brightness at "30". The rest of the work is done by the scaler.

Yeah there is no way i'm going to use this projector with a 4M screen! Just way to big. That was juts a test to see what the projector could take. It wasn't as dim as you'd think though, with a 100% light contriolled room (read pitch black), it was watchable. (Maybe because i have brand new tubes in it?)

But yeah, i will probobly make the screen about, 140-150" diagonal .. maybe 3m or so wide? 1.6m high. Actual size will depend on the calculations i do to make it 16:9. The rest of the "4m" screen will be masked off for "future use".

The room is isn't overlay large now, but will seat 8 comfortably. 2 rows. The actual room size is about 18 feet long x 17 feet wide. I think about 3 meters/10 feet will work ok in my room, considering it's fully controlled.

So yeah the screen will be built as a 2.35:1 4m screen (yes that's big for my room, but that's the effect i'm going for) for future use only..maybe a dig one day? who knows .. i don't want to rebuild the screen wall in 2.35:1 later on again. Masking is easy to do, easy to build big and mask smaller.

Here's another shot. The picture really has some kick to it at 4m wide! I'm amazed. Apart from the pic being off a phone and the convergance was way off on the sides because all i did was "RGB Size" to stretch it to the sides of the raster. Overall though it gave a nice pic (to me).

You say you have new tubes? Running 100% contrast all the time will change that in a hurry. On my portable 5 foot wide 1.0 gain screen I ran at a contrast of 58 or so. On the 8 foot wide high gain (3-4 ish ) home made screen we had I ran at 64.

You will toast your tubes in a hurry running it like that. BUT they are your tubes so have at it.

On my 1251q i am able to run a 111" (2.8194 m) wide blackout cloth screen at 69 contrast and 33 brightness. Seems to look fine, I'm sure it should be brighter, but in my all dark basement it looks bright enough.

Running your projector at 100 contrast will fry those new tubes in a hurry! Please don't do it.
