Hi Mac, my neighbour was just given a Sony KP-53V80. I'm just heading out to have a look at it. There's no output from the Red tube he says. We'll tear it apart and see what's what.

Any known issues with this chassis? STK chip? etc....

I pulled a copy of the SM so I have that.

Did a check and no common failures, which is a good thing.

I'll check for service bulletins.

STK's wont cause no red.

Let me know what you have after you get a look at it.

No red output is a video issue, not an STK issue. The last time I had one, the video output chip was bad, and it was mounted right on the CRT socket. All three should be identical if the chip is on the socket, and you can swap neck boards to see if the problem is on that board.

If it's not, then try putting up the test/convergence pattern to see if that works on the red. If so, check other input connections, whatever one was being used could have cracked on the input PC board.

Just got back. I have it all apart. No obvious burnt components. We've now lost the blue as well.

All tubes are glowing.
I've got raster on the Blue and the Red, no image.

Green is fired up as normal projecting a picture.

I had to chide my neighbour for twiddling with the lens focus before I got there. He said he just couldn't help himself

The green neck card is different than the blue and the red. If the tube numbers are the same shall I swap the green socket to the red then the blue?

I need very specific answers.

1: Does the green display clear video?

2: Is there sound?

3: Is the menu clear?

4: If menu is clear can you go into the menu and look for an adjustment screen for red/blue and does it bring up a cross hair?

5: How many blinks per cycle, if it pauses between a certain number of blinks.

I'll guess 5.

OK I poked around as per Mac's instructions. Those capacitors look ok. However I couldn't find any of my 5 DMM's So I'll have to test them later.

I did manage to snap a piece of the power supply board off though damit! There's a really tight spade lug in the middle of the board I pulled and wigled, wiggled and pulled. Then the board snapped.

The hardest connector was on a peninsula part of the board with a moat machined around it. 1/4 inch or board holding on one end and 3/8" of board on the other. Stupid design.

SO I have to fix that too. ( grumble...sony...grumble )

The caps I PM'ed you to change stated, change them, dont look at them, dont test them...... change them. Then I said just look around for any visual things.
