|
|
I finally have a new blue tube for my 8500. I haven't replaced a tube in my projector yet. I have looked over the tube replacement procedure posted here (from the NEC XG manual), but I was hoping for something 8500-specific.
Is there anything posted/available that gives detailed instructions on replacing a tube in the 8500?
Is there any general advice you can provide before I tackle this?
My projector is ceiling mounted. I'm assuming I will need to remove it before attempting this.
Thanks in advance!

Yes, take it down. the 'tips' section gives you some basics, simply in the pix posted there that show how the whole tube housing comes out. It's pretty easy.

It's a new tube with all magnetics and focus coil already in place.

Well, then it's even easier.
Have at it. You can take the whole plastic housing off without unscrewing the two halves. That will save 10 minutes.

It's really easy to do on the ceiling with a 9500, on an 8500 not so much. However it's possible, I recently a tube on an 8500 on the ceiling. It's a bit of a pain but still easier than dropping/re-hanging 165 pounds. Tonight I'll try and put together a little word guide with pics. It does require a secone set of hands for a few minutes, my wife was the lucky winner

Awesome, thanks!
I would definitely prefer to leave it up on the ceiling if possible, but I'm prepared to take down if necessary.

I have dropped a complete 3 tube rack out of an 8500 without removing the PJ from the ceiling. It's a two man job. But removing a
Marquee from the ceiling is properly a 3 man job at least if you don't have a winch or lift.
The best advice possible: Don't rush the job. Take your time and triple check everything.

I pulled the three tubes out of my 8000 by myself when it was on the ceiling. It was not something I would want to ever do again by myself, but wouldn't be too hard with a second person.
But if you have a pulley mount, a winch, or a genie lift I would drop the Marquee and do it on the floor, the last thing you want to do is drop a minty tube, and chances of this happening are greatly reduced if the Marquee is already on the floor.

Hello
It is much easier getting the new tube in if you get two Allen bolts that are 1/2" longer than stock, these can be used as "pullers" and the vertical bolts (4) holding all three tubes together can be used as clamps when putting the original allen bolts back in, as the longer bolts will be too long to keep.
Also, before starting, lower the blue G2 to 55 and contrast/briteness to 30/30 as a precaution.

. | good advice, I just added it to my instructions.
Here's an Msword.doc I put together quickly (with pics) that shows how to remove only one tube. Ive done this twice and it worked well both times. It's not fool proof but I don't recommend fools working on CRT's anyway
BTW if these look familiar it's because it's an edited version of the HD mod's dis-assembly instructions.

Thanks, you rock! I can't wait to get my new tube in place. I'm not sure if I'll be able to get to it this weekend, but I will soon, and I'll report back with my success.

Carl since you have all the covers off take them outside and paint that thing.

I have most of it painted now:
I just need to get that last bit finished. Since I'll have it down from the ceiling anyway I'll do my best to take care of that.

Nice writeup, Dragan. Wish I'd had that when I pulled the green from MY 8500!! I did it on the ceiling, by myself, no helper, and I didn't know about the all-thread trick. Ooof. I would NEVER do that again.
I'd much rather drop the projector and work on it on the floor. Which, again, I do by myself, no helper. With Clarence's Patented Chain Lift technique, I can take the 8500 up to the ceiling in about 7-8 minutes. Takes another few minutes of grunting and swearing to get it into the mount, but I've literally gone from the floor to fully in the mount in less than 15 minutes.
