48/72/96 refresh is needed to get smooth pans with 24p material, but this was probably not what you asked.
Visual flickering in bright scenes is main issue for me, I get headache of that flashing.
With low refresh rates it's also possible to see crt rainbow effects in some scenes that have extreme contrast differences. It's something like rainbows with DLP projector, but not that bad. Primaries can be seen in bright objects edges.
RGB phosphors have different glowing times so those turn off at different time, that makes seeing primaries possible in certain scenes. Usually person who see flickering, can also see this crt rainbow effect.

I use pc with 1080i96 (95.904Hz) Powerstrip custom timings.

But wouldn't 1080i@72hz kinda mess everything up. Seems like you would have to display 48 or 96 to get smooth pans?

Yes, 1080i@72 wouldn't work well. But, a progressive signal at 72 would work well. For instance, 1080p or 720p@72 would you get you smooth pans, but so would 1080i @ 96.
