Hi guys. Just received my new D50 from ebay. Tubes have only the slightest hint of wear and the timers read 625 hours - ebay cost inc delivery £300 so happy me Surprised)

Can anyone tell me the brightness and contrast settings I should be running the pj at ?

Also, looks like the previous owner had a fun time messing with the drive and cut levels for the tubes so the colours a bit off. Will tackle that once I'm more familiar with the set but overall, well happy.

Thanks as always.

Brightness should be set so black is black and contrast should be set to where you like it. Its hard to set these controls if the others are set incorrectly (drive/cut).

Thanks - main worry is driving the tubes too hard considering they are minty.

You can cause more damage by not having the drive/cut set properly.

Ok - will have to learn how to do that then. In the mean time I'll pray...

I have my D50 set at 45 and 64. It's an high hour projector with toasty-ish tubes. 6500 hours.

Thanks analog. I know every pj is different but could you note down the bias and gain values for your set next time you have it on so I can see if mine are ballpark please ?

Am so chuffed with the D50 Surprised)

I am on my second D50 and run them pretty hard. About 75 constrast and 80 brightness. I can easily get 3 to 4 years of use at these settings which works out to less than a $100 per year.

Why do you need your brightness cranked so high? Isn't that making your black level grey?

No offense to either of you guys but your posting information based on the fact(at least I hope it is) that your bias and gain are properly set. If these are not correctly set (as he has indicated) then your posting are completely meaningless and also incorrect........

Yep true. But hey I'll throw some numbers out there.

Thanks - just give me some reassurance that mine is at least within the ballpark.

Maybe just go into the bias and gain settings and set them at midpoint. Then set the contrast at 50 and have no signal on so you have a black screen. Then look into the lens and adjust the brightness until none of the tubes emit a raster (just to a point where the last one goes from slight glow to no glow). Ignore the adjustment graph. Then project an image and set the contrast for a watchable picture.

The D50 sure is a lot more involved than my 2 data 701's. Barco certainly got their software spot on in terms of ease of use.

BTW, in case anyone searches for default D50 brightness and Contrast settings in future, sony state brightness on 50 and contrast on 80 ( but that's way too bright for me so I have brightness on 45 and contrast on 65 ).

This is what I meant if the bias and gains are not properly set. Those settings will determine where the brightness and contrast end up. Also, those default settings are for setting the bias and gains. Very Happy

Lol, tks. I have a lot to learn Smile

BTW - currently running at 800 x 600. When I choose 1024 x 768 I get a much smaller picture and cant max it out to fill the screen. Is this usual ?

Nope that's not usual. It means you need to do a setup for 1024x768.
