Merry christmas everyone.

Eventhogh I've had some problems over the last few months, I have got used to them and lived around them. Like the problem of the projector not waking when i use the remote, but i just pull the power and switch it back on and the remote works to turn the crt on.

But now, there is a new developement that i'm guessing theres something failing on one of my boards, but i dont know what or how to fix it.

After a couple of hours of watching the projector, and im guessing as its warmed up, the focus will jump, and i have to change it from the normal 50 setting to 68. the convergence will also shift aswell and needs adjusting, ive noticed its only the yellow grid that needs changing.

the next day the focus will need to be adjusted back to 50 when the projector's cold.

these 2 probelms (power-up and focus jumping) might be connected but i don't know how to test or even fix it. even replacing a board I wouldn't know what board to replace.

I'm hoping someone here can help with getting this fixed.

Thanks,

marc

I am guessing you have a bad focus board, CLM, or HVPS. THe only way to check them is via substitution. I can test all of them for you if you want.

It could be stig snap, but not likely IMHO.

Cheers!

It might be what Dragan says, but if its ceiling mounted check the Focus board to make sure its seated in the socket well. Also look at the foam on the cover of the focus board. if it is worn it might not be keeping the the board tight in its socket.

One more thing, with the cover off check to see if you can feel air blowing out from the Focus Board case hole, if not you might have a seized fan and that is causing the focus setting change. That fan also pushed the air out the back and over the convergence board, that can cause the convergence to shift but most likely its caused by the focus adjustment, if the Astig magnets are not set up perfectly focus adjustment will make the grids move, most people have a hard time setting this perfect, including me Very Happy

Well if the front cover over the power supply bays is original there should be a white sticker on the front where you plug the power in. The board in question is shown here,

http://www.etechvideo.com/techarticle2.htm#

what you need to find out is how old this board is and whether it's PCB#50-002036-03P manufactured before July 1997

I updated my profile, including my location, Athens, Greece.

I opened it up, the focus board was rather hot but all belly fans were moving. I took the board out to see if there was any thing that looked broken, but couldn't see anything, but i dont think i'd see it anyway even if there was something broken.

I'll see if it makes any difference by reseating the board.

and it has an Issue Number sticker on the board connector indicating it is issue number 2

Hi Marcos, you said that only the yellow grid needs adjusting, that is the red and green color, so the red needs to be brought into convergence. Try switching the red and blue focus connectors and see if it goes to the blue, if so you have a bad red focus channel. get new board from curt.

Hi & Happy New year.

Well, reseating the focus board has seemed to fix the problem. It hasn't jumped yet Smile

I'd like to see if i can fix the power up problem (changing the batteries as I pointed out in another earlier thread hasn't worked)
Here's a reminder of the problem: After i power down the projector using the remote and leave it for about 30min and I turn it back on with the remote, NO image comes back. All the fans are running, several clicks but not the correct clicks as normal.
After i pull the power cord and leave it unplugged for about 10sec and plug it back I can use the remote to turn it on and the projector powers up, fans run, some clicks and the light/image comes back.
I have found i can use the remote to turn it off and back on again only if I turn it back on immediately. So, something is failing when the projector is on standby.

What do you guys suggest I do?

Reseat and clean the contacts on the HDM, under the other metal cover between the G and B tubes.

I was having some jumping and horizontal "picture vibration" at 1080p but not at 1080i. I pulled the HDM, cleaned and reseated the daughter board contacts and reseated the two chips on the daughter board, put it back in , and ran 1080p all day after that without one glitch.

Many erratic problems can be cured just by reseating chips and boards and cleaning some connectors. It should be routine maintenance.

this is a weird problem, i've cleaned and reseated all boards. with no fix Rolling Eyes

once i've pulled the power plug and leave it out for a few seconds and put it back i can use the PWR button on the remote to switch it on & off, i can watch all day with a fabulous picture. The problem comes when i turn it off for the night and return the next day. When i press the PWR button on the remote no image comes up. There is a very high pitched (dog whistle high) whistle/squeak that i don't hear when i can turn it on normally. If it would help you to understand i could make a small movie so you can hear whats happening...

I don't know the projector well enough, but i did think that it's like there is a battery or some capacitor that is filling up while the proj is in standby and by removing the power the battery/capacitor is flushed so the proj can be switched on...

what should i do now?

Your Marquee can't sync to 24Hz. You need at least 50-60Hz. That's why you get noise at 1080p/24.

The Wining could be some bad capacitors on the Convergence boards or the Vertical deflection boards, this might be why your convergence is jumping.

Not sure about the power up problem, it could be the LVPS acting up. that too should be re capped. DraganM has a marquee upgrade program for the boards. you might have him do it as it will give your marquee some new life. And if there is a problem with one of those boards he'll find out and he can send it to curt for repair.

Personally Marcos if you could do with out your Projector for a few weeks Id send the board to draganm. And maybe look for another LVPS too while your at it. or have some one re cap it for you.

EDIT: Just saw the jumping is gone, but for the power up problem Curt could be right about the HDM, when you removed it and cleaned the contacts did you also remove the smaller PCB board on the HDM? If not remove it and clean those contacts too, then try it one more time.

yes, i pulled the HDM and gave all connectors a spray of DeoxIT D5, also sprayed and reseated the small board on the HDM. Is there another way to clean the contacts...?

I'm starting to think like you Athanasios, let draganm go over my boards, and have them upgraded. Also I would like to get my LVPS upgraded to become quieter, I've seen somewhere here there is a service for that too. I just need to think when it would be a good time to be without the proj, its being used every day by me & the family and being without it for even a week would be a great loss... Wink

Yes wait for the Summer or spring when your family will have out door activities.

For the LVPS Tim Martin does it as does Greg Eisemann , but Id send it to Tim and he can check it over to see if its the reason your having a turn on Problem.

I remember you said you had a small Glycol leak last year, if so then that leak might have caused some problem with turn on if any got into the back plane or near the LVPS connector.

I should have come down to Athens last spring. I wish I had time to get away from my restaurant here and come to your place with all the parts and do the work for you on the LVPS I could also do the work Drags but I would not want to take a sale away from him.
