By an amazing coincidence the hole spacing on a panel mount SMB connector almost perfectly matches the hole spacing on the PCBs for the mini RCA connectors on the VIM and Neck cards. A couple of tiny 0-80 screws, nuts, and washers will mount the connector to the board. I'm sure there is a suitable metric size, too. You have to put small diameter washers between the connector body and PCB on the top side and between board and nuts on the other side to keep from shorting signal to ground. There is a big hole to fill to connect the signal to the PCB. Someone will think of a good way to connect the two. A cable with right angle connectors and you got it. Coming soon to new VDC projectors. (Unless someone knows where to get the right angle male mini-RCA connectors?)

Nice! Hey Scott, looking at those pix reminds me of something:

Why not ask the bosses at VDC if you can put out a 'DIY' Marquee projector.. something like Heathkits... for big boys! Very Happy

Hell, only give the schematics in the box, and a messload of parts. We can have a competition here as to who can make it work first. I'd be the first to buy one, but as with Heathkit way back when, allow people to buy the chassis only... without the pix tubes. THat would drop the price, and I've got enough tubes here for mine...

How about something a little different. What if you soldered the video cable direct to the boards on both ends and put male/female BNC connectors on the fly?

Your in my head Chip? I was thinking this long time ago when i was looking for connectors. I wanted to solder a short coax
cable fitted with the BNC end aon both boards, and actually make the VNB coax about 6 inches long so you would not have to remove the Metal Cage each time you wanted to test for a bad VNB, just pop off the BNC and swap them with no cage removal.

On Another Note, I have been looking over the RGB schematics on the Ampro Chip Wink

Looks like some changes can be made Smile

Huh. I wonder if anyone would buy the pj without the tubes and lenses? That would cut the cost way down. I think the only way it would work is if there was a 900 number (are there still 900 numbers?) for the tech service. I imagine there would be alot of calls.

You know, I have samples of that part. The purchasing person told me that there was some sort of problem with them or getting them. I'll have to check it out on Monday. I wonder how you put them together and if they would take the pulling and tugging on them to unplug from the boards?

Its only 42 bucks for 50, i should get some and give it a shot. they might work ok if the cable ground shield is soldered well enough to the plug or add a larger blob of solder on the inner side of the hole if it is accessible from the top. that might keep the cable in place while pulling on it.

I thought about going to SMA or SMB cables several years ago. But I didn't pursue it as I didn't, and still don't, know how it will affect
performance to be using 50 ohm cables and connectors on what I must presume to be a nominal 75 ohm circuit. I didn't want to get into
extra work if it wasn't going to make for a better product.

How does the new version with SMB cabling work out? Any bandwidth or ghosting issues?

75 ohm cables and connectors are available in SMB. The circuit is nominally 75 ohms but if isn't, exactly. The back termination resistors for red and green on the VIM are 24 ohms. The blue back termination resistor is 75 ohms.

I will probably test the SMB idea with 50 ohm cables. Those I ordered from Digi-key already made. I would have to make 75 ohm ones. That will come later.

Curt, I also like the DIY idea,
Especially for the VNB, which the pics shows.

Then we could have the latest design without buying a New projector.

Maybe a DIY VIM also??

Wasn't there a big thread on the VNB cables were 50 ohm OEM??
Not 75 ohm.

Yep.. Plain new VNB PCB without components for us diy folks would be nice..
TSE, is there partnumber just for plain new VNB pcb??

Part number for new, bare neck card PCB is 65518-01 Rev C.
Don't forget the new heatsink.

IIRC, the majority of Marquee boards are built by a board house in Ontario, aren't they?

With no local board manufacturing, getting blank boards to stuff yourself would be a challenge. Plus many of the parts used in some
boards like the HDM are available from a very limited number of distributors.

Here's a suggestion that I think is reasonable, though: Board refurbishment and updating to latest revisions, at VDC, for a reasonable
price. Provided the board you have is suitable for updating.

Here's a tech question for you as well, Scott. I've got an HDM which develops a rapid "jiggle" but only at 1080p. And only when it's
been running at THAT mode for several minutes. It's like something heats up when running at 1080p but not when running at lower
resolutions, and when it gets hot enough, these shakes start up. They're strongest at the top of the picture and the shake is so
rapid that it's almost a blur. Any idea what's going south here?

Chris unplug the CVA cables and see if the shaking stops, it might not be the HDM but the CVA.

having worked in manufacturing for decades I can say with certaintly the cost of having a company do that would be more than the cost of a brand new board.

LOL, you would need to hire a whole team of people to man the phones, and that would be just for the first few chassis's sold. Surprised If you guys decide to sell chassis's minus tubes it would have to be to qualified tech's who know what they're doing. Otherwise you'de be selling a can of worms.
I think the better option is to have an affordable board package but the real problem is no matter how affordable you made it the market isn't really there to support the costs. The average HT enthusiast, even one who loves CRT, is hard pressed to drop even a few hundred bucks anymore.
