Hmm... I'll have to look at my machine to see if it was done. I doubt it.
It's more than just a mod - the TSB says you need a new DD board with a -12 suffix.
Heck, I'll have to throw up an image with the black squares on white to see what it's talking about. I got excited when I saw the title, because the one problem I've noticed is a sort of streaking, where it looks like beam current drops off on the scan lines to the right of a bright object. I haven't gotten around to asking anybody about that issue.
I don't think I'd be up to doing this myself on my own (and one and only) machine. I'd feel better buying some spare boards and paying one of the guys here to do it for me. That's if it's even an issue. I'll have to try it this weekend.

If your DD board has three wires coming off it, you have the mod.
Now, where are the rest of the G70 tech bulletins?

Yeah, I wish we had MORE for the G90. I am going to look at this smear / streaking fix bulletin for the G70n and see if I can apply it to the G90... I have been working on the fix for the G90 for months now and still haven't managed to isolate the streaking.

I wonder if it's the same "streaking" though, Craig. The "smearing" in the G70 bulletin seemed to refer to a mostly-white screen, and some sort of "smearing" that occurred to the right of a small dark area. I thought the "streaking" we're always talking about was a little different. Or, maybe it is the same problem.
I'm going to do a test this weekend like the one in the bulletin to see what my machine does, and I'm also going to take a photo of the problem I see in mixed scenes on my machine to see if it's the same problem you guys are talking about with the G90. The disk I really notice it on is the Dave Matthews/Tim Reynolds BD. I think the mixed scenes with mostly dark APL combined with the really hot highlights on the chrome tuning knobs, guitar bodies, and lights really screw with the signal or something. I'll have to see if I can stop it in a spot where it's happening and capture an image.

I don't know if it's the same problem either. However, if the gamma and black level on the G90 are set correctly, the worst streaking occurs with a black object streaking onto a white background. Streaking of white onto a black backgrounds isn't really a problem.
I've attached a test pattern that I made the other day that shows the most obvious streaking I can find on the G90 so maybe it will help with your G70 testing. The black boxs streak across to the right of the white field. Inversely, the white running through the black boxes in the middle acts like a tunnel of streak free video on the other side. It provides a lot of streaking.

Cool... Thanks, Craig. I'll give it a try, along with a couple of others I've been thinking about, and I'll report back here in this thread.
I assume The G70 and G90 are massively different, but perhaps some of the same bits are used here and there, and one may offer some clues on how to affect the other.
Thanks,
SC

Well, the G90 and G70 are a lot more alike than either is to a 1292

ecrabb,
If you determine your set doesn't have the smear fix - I have what you need.

I see the old DD board (pn A-1343-311-A) is still available new from Sony US but the new (pn A-1343-312A or A1343-405A) DD board is'nt, I wonder what the differences are between the 2 DD boards and weather the upgrade can still be performed without the new DD board, I think not?...
Cheers...

Yes, Doc is sending me G90 boards for modification. I can’t say with 100% confidence the mod will eliminate all the artifacts however from understanding the cause of the problem and studying the G90 my feeling is it will lessen them. I can say with confidence that if the 1292 mod doesn’t work 100% on the G90 that I can redesign it to work 100%. That is when I get my G90 test bed.
A side note, a variation of the mod was designed for a barco. Not having a barco I used a software program “SPICE” to design the mod. The results were less then perfect but encouraging. The streaking was not eliminated but reduced by an estimated 60%. I can’t verify the results as the modifications and testing are being done elsewhere.
Craigr, can you make a test pattern with a 255,255,255 RGB horizontal rectangle on a 12,12,12 background and post a picture of what the G90 displays?
And Craig, I am curious, can you explain what you base you skepticisms on?
