So, being a little curious, I ventured over to the Blu-ray forums and especially the 'home theater galleries' section. The first three so called 'home theaters' were nothing more than a living room setup. Are people really this numb to the English language, and the concept of a movie theater at home? This is like me taking a cardboard box, putting some wheels on it and calling it my muscle car or rice burner. 
Now, I am not an old fart and I still get carded to this day. And while I haven't been in a commercial movie theater in a handful of years, even I cannot stoop as so low to call a flat panel TV on a TV stand in a family or living room a 'home theater'. Its just ... insulting.
And i can only conclude that these kind of poor human examples have no appreciate of a movie theater, let alone one at home. Makes me disappointed in the human race.

I'm sorry but i disagree. I dont know that i want a dedicated "theater". I dont like recliners, rope lights, risers..etc.
My planned room will be in a Living room setting, couch, comfy chairs, ottoman, carpet. Really casual sitting arrangements. But the theater aspect will be top notch. Controlled lighting, screen, remotes etc...
Mebbe down there in Hotlanta you have the space to dedicate to a theater room, but here in a more "urban" Phila, Real estate is costing around $139.00 a square. So a 20 x 15 dedicated theater room costs me almost 42k just for the space.
I need to use my space more efficiently.

My theater room is a multi- purpose space. It's not a "dedicated" theater, we use it for watching regular tv and internet access as well as group activities. There are three televisions, two computers, two large couches, a king sized bed and a swing. It's my bedroom too. It's a great theater space, but it's not a home theater in a box or used solely for movies either.

Huh? I am saying that of those on the BD forum. If it happens to coincide with you, fine. But there is a differece between wanting one thing and doing another.
Just because we all cannot afford a $1 Million Exotice Sports Car that can do +200 MPH shouldn't me others should be impressed when you put that Lambo badge on your old Chrysler beater. 
If you want more than a boob-tube in the family room that is fine. But calling a something that isn't a theater a home theater just makes you a Sticker Queen.

$139/sf....wow I can only wish.
My house is around $245/sf.
I'm actually pretty lucky to have a dedicated theatre/excerise/kid play room.

I'm not surprised that many call their setups "Home Theaters" because they really are theaters in their home. Sure they may be small to us but we're silly and obsessed. There's no definition of "home theater" really so you take it any way you define it.
What surprises me more is that people bother posting pictures of their home theaters that are in some cases basically just $199 home-theater-in-a-box setups with a small TV. Sure, it's a home theater, but why post pictures of something so blah and boring that nobody's going to care about?
It would be like going into a Honda enthusiast forum and posting a picture of a car like this:

$139 is an average, the neighborhood i'm moving to is currently @ 152.00. Down from close to 209.

WOW. We weren't really affected real estate wise from all the down turn.
Victoria know as the retirement capital of canada. Home of the Newly wed and nearly dead.

i'll show what the housing bubble did to phila...
Look at this graph... Now i have said and continue to say that homes do NOT double in VALUE in 10 years.
If you look at the graph you see housing prices here.. a notoriously stable RE market did. No wonder so many homeowners are under water, in their mortgages.

not a huge decrease at all.
Very interesting to see the house value trends. Up here in Canada, all that we hear about is how some homes in the US were worth $500K a year and a half ago and now they are going for $125K. You don't hear about the housing markets that have pretty much bounced back.
pretty much the same as here. I bought my place yrs ago for $283K, they are going for $450K now for an 1,800sf house and a 3300 sf lot.

As i said, Phila is a relatively stable market. No big leaps no big drops. But the trend in my mind was tilted to high as well.
Average around 60k in 2000 and 158k in 09???

 Judas Priest... I can buy a 4,000 sqft, 5BR/3BA, 3-car garage, with finished basement and nice finishes on 1/4 acre here for that kind of money... In one of the most expensive suburbs in Iowa.
This is listed for $419k right now - just a few miles from me:
This one is out in the country a bit, but it's only about a 15-minute commute from the urban center... Half that to retail, restaurants, etc...
$400,000 on 7.75 wooded acres, 5BR 4.5BA
Taxes are $7500/year though. Ouch.

That happened in some markets, but it's definitely not the norm nation-wide.
Here's a price chart for Phoenix, one of the hardest-hit markets. Looks like the median price dropped nearly 2/3, and it's only started to come back. I could probably find worse examples if I knew the right zip codes to look in, but this is the result for Phoenix overall.
The second one is Palm Springs CA, east of LA. It's dropped from almost $450 to just over $100k, and hasn't really popped back yet. So there are places where it really was that bad.
The third one is Fort Collins, CO, where I live. You can see the prices here have been MUCH more stable. We didn't see the big runup, but we didn't see a big crash either.

Here's 4 examples of what 390k will get you in Phila. All 3 Br 1 to 1.5 baths.

I like watching all those house hunting shows. Man, for what I can get in some places to what my place is worth. Huge differences.
then again I could sell my place and buy a big a$$ house in Winterpeg and have to deal with the -40 tempatures. NO thanks.
my property tax is about $1700 a year.

thats what we call in Phila a "rowhome". They are townhouses built on a street that runs kinda diagonally. they are stepped in order to maximise the lot space. It's actually 3 houses.
