Kal mentioned in another posting some thought about the new multiple forum setup.

Do you like it this way or do you prefer just one big board. Question

Thanks for posting this... I've heard both sides so far.

Some food for thought:

- If we stay pretty small, one forum's probably enough.
- If we grow larger here, the multiple forums may make sense, though I have to wonder: Nobody's building new CRT's so I doubt this 'community' could grow that much larger.
- Keeping things separate really helps the newbies that are trying to learn about a specific topic (or visitors that don't visit often).
- Forum regulars probably all prefer to see everything in one forum to make it easier to see what's new.
- Keeping everything together in one forum most likely gets more people to post/answer questions.

Those last two points are probably going to make it hard to get a good answer as to what's best as the regulars are probably the only ones that are going to vote right? The infrequent visitors that are best served with multiple forums probably won't vote (or ever register!). We have a lot of guest visitors.

Any other thoughts?

Either way, it'll be easy to switch back if we want, but it would be nice to at least give the multiple forums another month or so just to see how they work out. It hasn't been very long since things have been split up (Only a week or two).

Kal

lots o' compartments is just fine with me ... hate sorting through the chafe to find the stuff I think is relevant. In a place that is a forum for CRT owners it is nice to have an off topic area or a tech area to allow a finer focus of information, saves time.

Everything is relevant... by the time most members get to this forum, most already have the components to a solution, or have a general idea of what's better and what to aim for.

I hardly ever check out the 13 sub-forums. I check this main forum several times a day... there are usually 3 days worth of posts on the front page, so it's easy to get caught up on anything new.

I check the For Sale forum every other day or so.
I check the OT forum every other week or so.

But when I posted my latest screen info, it got moved to the Screens subforum. That's fine for a newbie that knows to go there for screen info. But 99.44% of us already have something for a screen. So how many of us will check out the screen subforum to see if there's anything worth considering today or this week or this month?

I'd prefer keeping CRT, OT, and FS as the 3 main forums until the daily topics of the main forum starts to overflow the front page.

But then again, I don't like the "Digital Horror Stories" and "Ruby" stickies either. I understand the motivation behind propaganda, but if a topic is substantial enough to enough people, it'll bump to the top on it's own. Might as well have a "D%!#@| Sux" sub-forum.

Yeah I am about the same for sub-forum visits(just throw in htpc as well!!) and as far as the stickies Confused dont'cha think that a topic that has not warranted a post for almost 2 months can be put out to pasture??

Is there a way to have both?? (Maybe a master forum?) And then maybe an option when you login to which setup you would prefer??

Hey Gino: Can't have both since the poster has to choose a forum to post in... can't really work both ways.

As for the two stickies, they're Curt's threads so he'll have to do it (I can do it but don't want to step on his toes since its his forum).

Actually Gino, we do already have something like this (I forgot!):

You can always click on the link "View posts since last visit" at the top left when you first come on the forum. This is what I do. It then just lists any new posts together on one page.

You can also look at the icons before the forums. If they're like this:

... then there are new posts since your last visit.

If they're like this:

... then there are no new posts since your last visit.

Kal

I think multiple forums makes the most sense, maybe not this many divisions though.

It may take a while for people to realize where the forums are and where to post a certain question.

And,.. Most people are in the main CRT forum for now so posts elsewhere just sit and wait, but that I guess would change as more awareness of the different sections grows.

You know on AVS I used to only read the HTPC forum for quite some time but I find it nearly unreadable now. Perhaps the art of HTPC is changing too quicky and there are far too many types of hardware and software now. It used to be that you needed certain hardware for things to work but things changed quite a lot. I'm thinking as this board grows the HTPC forum may become unreadable too...?

Anyhow,.. I look into several of the forums and I guess others will too eventually.

that's what i do for all the php boards to which i subscribe. i go as far as to have the link for "find new posts" for each board bookmarked so i rarely go to the home page for any of the boards.
