Hi I currently have a Sony VPH 1272Q and have looking to upgrade to something with less hours. I'm in college and am just looking for something to hold me over till I'm done with school. I found a low hour 9PG Xtra and am thinking about getting it. I just wanted to know if it would be worth upgrading. My current projector has 5600hrs and the 9PG is supposed to have less than 100hrs on original tubes. I have been looking into setup and it seems that the 9PGs are not as user friendly and require more board adjustments. I like my sony and it has been very reliable and easy to setup. I don't know much about nec projectors and want to know what you think about the 9PG Xtra projectors.

it would be a MAJOR upgrade.

Way sharper, better colors, plus the EMF tubes won't get softer with age like the ESF tubes in your Sony.

I agree, major upgrade. Great little units, loads of control, tough to learn, but Curt's xg setup guide helps a lot.

The NEC's are waaaayyy sharper, much, much more exact in their representation, but they're a bit difficult to setup. Sony's and NEC's are somewhat similar in some respects, so it wouldn't likely be all that difficult to learn.

The biggest factor is the newness of the Xtra, something like that is basically brand new, as they run crt projectors a certain amount in the factory to break them in anyway, so 100 hours is pretty much brand new.

You'll be shocked at how much sharper it is than the tired Sony....

The fact that the Xtra is so new is the main reason I'm even thinking about it. I looked at the setup guide and even though it is more complicated then the 1272 it doesn't seem to bad. I think that the fact that their specs are almost identical is what was making me question if it would be worth it.

The Xtra will be a sharper, brighter and have amazing colors. The specs say they'll be similar, but look at the best-worst list. They aren't that close at all. It's only information so take it with a grain of salt. I've viewed a sony 1252 and own a 9PG+ (small step down from the xtra, but there are more parts around for it). The PG+ was a big improvment to me. If mine had done 1080p I might not have upgraded... maybe.

Thanks for all the help and I think I'm going to have to go pick it up. With work and exams I'm not going to be able to get it till next weekend. I told him Ill take it so I really hope he doesn't sell it to someone else before I can get there. Ill let you know how it goes and hopefully next weekend Ill be learning how to setup a new projector.

I've only owned 2 projectors a BG800 and the XG I currently have. I think the "Hard to Setup" claim is way over blown. Once you understand the basics you can setup in input in 1/2 hour or less. The coming from the Barco I found a NEC had more flexibility and control.
