What's wrong with the Cine9?

I've heard a few reports that the Cine9 is not a lot better than the G90 in regard to parts availability, but I don't know any specifics. Can someone advise if there are YA Board level deal breakers with the Cine9 or are parts just generally expensive? Is there any part of the projector that's particularly prone to failure?

I'd really like to own one of these one day, it'll hopefully be my last CRT projector. But would like to know what I'm up against if I'm lucky enough to ever get hold of one at the right price.

I have seen 8 units this year, as compared to 1 last year and none before that. Parts are therefore scarce, but I"ve got almost one of each spare right now, and will ahve a full set when I repair one controller board and one G2 board.

It's a complete redesign of the Barco chassis, so almost nothing of the older sets fits into the Cine 9/909. I know of several being deinstallled next year, so parts supply will get better, as it is with the G90 right now.

No worries, they will be out there, will be repairable, but right now the prices are still high.

Interesting. My brother-in-law works in the flight simulator industry, and they use Barco 909s still in new simulator designs and installs for the military. I've been meaning to ask him if they have a stock of them or something since they are obsolete.

The chasiss should last 75K hours like others, so its' really only tubes that they would need.

And a guy like me that knows how to repair the boards. Very Happy

Curt - Read what he wrote again... He's saying the company his brother-in-law works for is still installing new 909's in sims... Which, I find very difficult to believe.

Didn't Barco hand the design or production over to some other company - a French company or something? Could they still be building new machines?

I thought practically anybody still integrating CRT projectors in new installs were using VDC. I didn't know anybody else was manufacturing new CRT projectors at all.

Good question. I just wonder how many 909s were bought for use with military and government facility's ? Cool Cool Cool

Damn speed reading again!

Cineversum took over the Cine line. I'd assume they are still making them?

I know I sold more sets this past year to industrial clients than ever before, and seeing that VDC jacked the price of Marquees up, it's small wonder why some people come to me. The lack of money/recession is actually doing me some good I think.

New 8500: $34K
Retubed 8500: $3K.

For commercial clients that pay full retail, I put a full 1 year warranty on the sets, so there's no real arguing buying a refurb machine.

Don't get a bunch of ideas though, sales to industrial clients would not keep me alive, there's not that many out there. It's a combo platter of HT sales, industrial clients and parts and service that keep me going.

There's a lot of "Installs" out there that were a part of a purchase dated several years ago. The product was delivered a long time ago, but the install takes place some time later. This happens often with commercial systems.

If Barco 909's are being installed anywhere, they were not purchase recently, or maybe within the past two years.

Next year should yield an abundance of Barco 909's. There's a lot of them scheduled for de-install...

Not that many, I'd guess. Because of that, I doubt they'll ever really be "cheap" for us hobbyists. Plus, with the price of tubes, even if you could score one for crazy cheap, you're going to have probably $2500 in new tubes to add to whatever you get the projector for.

yeah, I know they are Barco 909s they are installing for the US military for new aircraft simulators, but how long ago they were purchased I don't know. He can't tell me a whole lot, being classified stuff and all. I was a bit surprised myself when he told me Barco and not VDC. I do know that his latest simulator project was a two year deal from design to install, so I imagine the Barco was sourced at least that time ago as Mike mentioned.

Does that mean you would rather go digital?Smile

I think it would depend on the install and when the pj was retubed. There might be some decent pjs that hit the market. Of course there will be the guys like the ones in SoCal who think they can make some money off of them.

A bunch of places have RS 232 control of their projectors, and if Barcos were speced years ago, you know the gov't, it would take years of research, meetings and tenders to switch the code to Marquees.

I'm being sarcastic, but I'll bet there's some truth in that.

are you kidding? They wouldn't waste tax payer money in just going to VDC, they would go all out and buy a whole new simulator, after they enacted some bogus laws so that some company can profit from it. It's the American way!
