in that case the 6X with P16 tubes should easilly do 720P, no scan lines and no flicker. I tried 1080i on my 8500 and while the flicker wasn't a problem to my eyes the scan lines did bother me, even from 10 feet away.

Yes, before I ran 1080i 72hz on my Xtra I ran 720p 72hz.
Which 1080i did you run? 1080i 60hz does have bad field flicker. At 72hz it's less, and at 96hz it's basically gone.
IMO a 6200(A) Xtra is the pick of 8" machines. Late build date, colour filtered, sharp - with P16 thin neck tubes, and not as noisy as an air coupled XG.
You have to go LC to better it. If you fit 144/145s to an 808 or Marquee with P16s you would equal it.

Thinking of this question from the perspective of a tech trying to tell a customer who's not too familiar with CRT's and their RGB inputs, what he probably should have said is that you need an HDMI to RGB converter between your BD player, HDTV tuner,etc and the projector or it will look lame if you input the signal via the composite input.
If you feed it composite, all you get is 480i and visible scanlines. You need an HDfury, moome, or DVDO to make it possible to get the higher scanrates available coming from HD source devices.

or an HTPC with DVI-I video card output, and straight RGB from there
