|

I HAVE A SONY VPH-1252Q PROJECTOR. i READ IN A AUDIO/VIDEO FORUM LAST WEEK THAT THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE 1252 AND THE VPH-1272Q IS THE RESOLUTION IS 1280 X 1024 ON THE 1272Q VS 1024 X 786 FOR THE 1252Q. iT ALSO STATED THAT THE FRAME, BODY AND LENS ARE THE SAME. IT ALSO STATES THAT ADDING 2 CIRCUIT BOARDS TO THE 1252Q THAT ARE PRESENT ON THE 1272Q AND THE VPH 1271 WOULD GIVE ME THE SAME RESOLUTION. WHICH WOULD GIVE ME THE CAPABILITY OF HAVING A 16:9 SCREEN VS. MY 4:3 SCREEN. IS THIS CORRECT AND DO YOU KNOW WHICH BOARDS THAT WOULD BE? SO I CAN ORDER THEM OR FIND A SALVAGE 1272Q AND STRIP THE BOARDS. WOULD THIS BE COST EFFECTIVE TO DO OR WOULD I BE CHEAPER JUST UPGRADING TO A 16:9 PROJECTOR. THE 1252 WORKS GREAT FOR ME i HAVE OWNED IT SINCE 1997 AND HAVE NEVER HAD ANY PROBLEMS OUT OF IT. i TAKE IT APPART EVERY COUPLE OF YEARS TO CLEAN THE LENS AND KEEP DUST FROM BUILDING UP. ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED.
THANKS,
WILLIAM

William, Please use normal case letters when posting on this forum. Using all caps is like yelling and is harder to read. Thanks.

Yes, definitely nix the caps.
Here's a few points:
First, your 1252 is perfectly capable of displaying a 16:9 image.
Second, for running 1080i from Blu-ray, broadcast or HD cable, the differences between the 1252 and 1272 are practically irrelevant.
I wouldn't waste my time or money trying to swap boards or tubes into/from another machine, unless your tubes are worn and you can find another machine with better tubes.
If you learn how to set the machine up properly, practice, and take care in doing so, and your 1252 is in good shape, you can have an image that looks just as good as any from a 1272.
If you have upgrade-itis, I'd probably start keeping your eye for a new machine. The value of CRT's has plummeted in recent years, and you can find very nice machines for not a lot of money.
How many hours does your 1252 have on it, and how do the tubes look?

Thanks a lot. Your response has helped me alot and probalbly has saved me hundreds if not thousands. I have 3327 hours on my tubes. I really never watched my projector much. Just on Saturday and Sundays to watch the big games. My family we would watch a movie or 2 and for normal tv we would watch our standard hd rear projection for everything else. I think that is why my system is still in good shape. I presently watch about 10 hours per week during football season and 4 hours a week at best the rest of the year. I ordered a 16:9 screen already.
Thanks,
William

I've worked with both the 1252 and the 1272. Both look great at 1080i. The only advantage you have in the 1272 is the 21 points of convergence as compared to the 9 (?) of the 1252. However. If you setup the 1252 carefully it really doesn't make any difference.
