I lucked up on a G70 gamble. I finally picked up the G70 I bought off eBay for $900 last month. It was an estate sale from a lawyer that bought it a few years ago and just stored it. A flashlight inspection showed no burn patterns, so I was anxious to check the CRT hours. Didn't take the time to reseat boards or reverse polarity so just stood on my head and found 3200 hours. More than I hoped, but maybe it was in standby a lot, since it sure looks clean, bright, and even (but out of adjustment). This is a MAJOR step up from my 1020 and 1031Q, so I'll probably need a little help. I'll reread the G70 threads, and the manuals first, but I'm ignorant of some of the vocabulary. I'm anxious to see the difference, so may do a set up for practice while it sits beneath the 1031, before I hoist it up. Plus, I'm waiting on the lawyers wife to look for the PSS-70 mount.

So a few initial questions...should I...
- Clean edge connectors and reseat all boards?
- Install the fan mod?
- Remove lenses to clean inside (flashlight shows minor dust on surfaces)?
- Replace the factory CCQ interface or use an in-line (what's the best bang for the buck)
- Upgrade to comcast HD (duh...yes)
- Buy a blu-ray player (bang for the buck?)

Any other good preventive maintenance actions I should take?

I also noted that the warm-up screen did not come up. I assume I could enable it in the service menu, but I'm not sure of the need. Do you really need to warm this beast up for 20 minutes before use?

I'm considering fixing the little 1020 and set it beneath it (no fan) for watching news, etc. The kids (and I) have a bad habit of running it all night, and day. You know...like when the wife goes to bed too early. Those old units do last forever.
Will I be so disappointed in the 1020 after experiencing the G70, that I wouldn't ever watch it. Or is there a way to use a sleep timer to shut it down when the kids or I sleep in the den? (Wish it had one)

Mark

Do you find it loud? Is that why you're considering a fan mod? Or do you just want to optimize its cooling?

Congratulations. Sounds great.
If its running fine I don't see why you should reseat all the boards.
Its not a very loud projector so I don't see any reason to do a fan mod. I have heard its usually not very effective and not worth the risk of burning up your projector.
And yes sure clean dust the lenses. (Safely) Its something you'll have to do periodically anyway.

Don't know about the rest. Buying a Blu Ray is up to you. I use a PC with an internal Blu Ray. Your projector is beyond blu ray worthy so if you have no Blu Ray source than I'd say definitely yes. Unfortunatly Blu Ray doesn't just hook up. You have to buy an HDFURY or MOOME or possibly do some serious upgrades to your computer.

Most everyone at this point has universally determined the "warm up" screen mostly just burns up your tubes needlessly.

Take lenses off and clean. (don't forget to undo wire to each lens)
This will give you a good look at the tube faces and save about 50 lb. of weight when you hoist it.
Get a Moome internal HDMI card
Get a blu-ray player.
Enjoy being blown away by the PQ, esp. if you have it calibrated.

Nice pick up, BTW.

PS. 20 min warmup is excessive. 10 min is plenty.
