Hi all, I've been using a Sony 1272 for several months now in a room with 85" from front of projector to screen. Have Moone hdmi 1.3 card installed. Using DVDO VP30 set at 1920x1080i. Picture looks fine. Both the XG and PG Plus have about same condition tubes. Have not used either of those machines in such a small room. Have a Moone dvi card in the XG.

Just looking to try one or the other. Any thoughts on which NEC to use in this setup? Thanks.

Is the XG LC or AC? No matter as I would say you'd be wanting to go with the XG if price is the same or not a factor... At such a small screen, the 1200 lumens would provide a seriously punchy image... My only concern would be throw distance - someone else on the forum may have more to say on that...

Hi Ben,
Just to clarify: I have both NEC machines and the XG is none LC. I've used both at prescribed distance before but the only room at the moment available to me leaves just 7 feet to the screen Sad

Either will obviously be a big leap forward from the Sony in terms of picture quality. The XG85 has more potential but is harder to set up perfectly, it will be brighter and likely the better choice of the two just because it is the better projector of the two. I *think* the XG85 lenses have a slightly shorter throw distance too...Be aware that you may have to modify the lens mounting system to get good focus across the screen if you aren't mounting at the specified throw distance since NEC's don't have any form of infinitely variable lens flapping, and the XG will be slightly louder*(imho).

The XG will be a bit better, but also a lot louder.

XGs need a hushbox. Mine is basically silent in it's fibreglass hushbox.

Thanks again all for valuable advice. I shall try the PG Plus, I'm interested to see what the VP30 can do for it.

both are great and have the same great lenses, the XG has louder fans and better software...both will reward a patient person who takes the time to set them up. I would look at the tube condition and go from there. but with only 7 feet projection room I would start with the PG myself.
The colour and edge focus on NEC projectors is worth the effort.

i ran the screen distance through the XG Setup Manager from NEC and at 85" it says that the screen (image) width will be 59" wide, 44.36" high (74" diagonal).

the numbers always come out a bit small so increase that by 4% or 5% and your max screen width is about 62" at that distance.

that image is gonna really pop.

At this point I have little choice. There is a shed in the back yard that may give me a foot or so more but no power in it. Sad

jask, tube condition is about the same for both units.

zaphod, may have to wear sunglasses eh Smile Even at that it makes a welcome change to the 32" SONY in the living room.

Thanks again all.

TV/Projector: Marquee 9501LC / NEC 9PG+

Can't wait to hear what you think of it. Loved the 9pg+ on small screen/throw. Mine was 9.5 feet lens to screen and managed to get a 6.5 foot wide screen. I had minty tubes though and pushed the width on the tube face.
