Oh man....It's a good thing the NEC is smaller than most CRT's....because my ceiling is only 6'10 in my basement....this will be fun!!!

Ouch. That is tight. No riser for you!
Mine is about 7'-8" in the theater. Elsewhere in the basement, it drops to about 6'-8" at a lam beam and mechanical chase.

I'm at 8'10" when I built the house I paid about $2K more for the extra foot...IMO it was money well spent.

8 feet. I don't have much room either. the P/J is just about 6' from the floor. Head smakin territory for alot of folks.

That depends. It's really high when I lay on the floor but not nearly as high when I'm standing. It was ultra high when I took 5 Tylenol 3's in 3 hours.

My basement ceiling is annoyingly low... the HVAC and the beam drop to about 6'2" and the rest is barely 7 ft... Its a real when you are 6'5"
Where I wanted (want) to put the PJ would put it to low for sure... but I have a neat solution if I ever get time to finish it... The part of the basement I am using for HT and office is roughly 24x24... The theater gets half and the mini kitchen and office get the other half... The structural posts are wrapped and built dressed up with crown and base.... They will fall against a wall that will separate the theater and office... Then a fake soffit and posts will be built on the opposite wall to match the posts on the other side.. It shouldn't look half bad really.....
And for sure... if you are building one.... the 9 foot ceilings in the basement are the only way to go...

I built a well in the floor joints to lift the pj into,so the top of the lenses are even with the ceiling and that leaves 7 feet underneath....

so you weakened your joists eh?!.....did you reinforce them with anything? you have a good idea.....however my kids already think the living room as one big trampoline.

double headers,double trimmers with a double layer of glued and screwed 3/4 ply attached to the deck in the opening and supported by the headers.....should be o.k. 
did I mention that the kitchen fridge is directly above the Projector?
and that when I recline my head is under the projector?
as long as you can roll in full length trimmers, it is just like framing a stair opening, no problems!!

I am seriously considering having a structural engineer come in here and see about getting 2 more feet lower for 8'10. I hear it is not so bad for houses like mine because the electrical is all fed from the top level as well as the gas and water. Only the sewer and 1 other drain pipe need tp be adjusted.

Damn! You're even taller than I am! And a helluva lot more muscular and about 20 yrs younger. Maybe I should start treating you more politely.
I sure wish we'd gone for a deeper basement. Ours is just under 8' in most areas, but all the HVAC runs lower it to about 6'8" in a lot of places. It's about 7'10" where the projector hangs. I'm almost as tall as Ron so I hit my head on the 8500, but it's above the couch so it's not normally a problem.

Even if your joists are engineered, you would be better off doing what I did...it will cost you less than the engineering bill to drop a basement slab below its original design depth. Most residential footings are not deep/wide enough to allow you to excavate anywhere near them without a LOT of very expensive engineered headaches, what I did can be done by any carpenter in a few hours.

I just have to comment on this thread. The ceiling in my basement is 6'8" and I have a barco 808 hanging down below the joists. Not that this is drastically different that the other posting here but being that I am 6'10" tall this makes for interesting seating. Luckily the seating is below the projector so I don't have to work around it much but it still can be somewhat of a pain having to crouch down to work on the projector.
I just wanted Ron and Gary feel a little more normal

Geez.... being just taller than a standard door must be a real PIA.... or head I should say.... In my basement the duct work gets me every so often... I always remember to duck... but sometimes when in a hurry it isn't quite enough...  oh it makes me so mad....
The funniest basement finish I have seen in my life though was this job I had to finish up for one of the larger and more well known contractors in KC (Standard Improvement Company) They hired me to finish the job after the flake they had working for them well.... yeah.. uuuhhh... I got most of it fixed.. But the one thing they wouldn't let me change was the doorways that went under the beam... There were two doors that were installed directly under the beam... No big deal right... In fact a great place for a door... at roughly 6'7" or so it would really make a great place to install a doorway... That is unless the idiot they hired puts a HEADER under a giant steel beam  making the door rough open height WELL under 6 foot... and the door height was no taller than 5'7" inches or so by the time the idiot was done and the floor was in.... It had to be one of the dumbest things I have seen in my life... But they wouldn't let me fix it... Somehow they had already ordered custom 6 panel doors to fit the hole and they were not going to get changed... I couldn't figure it out until the homeowner came home one day...
The guy was no taller than 4'11" Hell... I guess his basement made him feel normal...

That's funny, Ron. It's funny how some people don't think about the decisions they make in their home outside the context of THEM owning it. It seems so simple to think about how most other people might perceive your decisions. Oh well... Maybe the guy was planning on living there till he died.
Tall freaks unite. I'm 6'-3".
I was PISSED after my house was built and I found out I didn't even have an 8' basement - I got screwed out of even THAT by 3". The builder didn't ask, and I never even though about it... I'd been in so many newer houses that had 9' basements, I assumed it was standard practice (even if added to the price). Thanks for not asking! Just another of the many ways my builder sucked.

Funny how things jogg the memory. Back when I was selling houses in Phila ,I sold one that had ceilings that were 6'8" throughout the home. The story went the man who owned it, and built it himself, felt since that was as high as he could reach with the hammer, that was all the taller the ceilings need to be.
And he did own it till he died, it was an estate sale. 
The home was a catalog order home from Sears & Roebuck, and the catalog was displayed on the kitchen counter for validation. 
Now that was an independent thinking man
