Hi all,

currently still in the middle of modding our NEC XG110LC to make it quieter (swapping all fans), but a possibility has come up to purchase a Barco 1208/s that has been modified with 9" tubes.

The Barco has been modified with 9" tubes and HD120 lenses, the exact model is 1208s E IRIS. Here are images of the tubes:

Red:

Green:

Blue:

Seems as if it has both a 4:3 and a 16:9 wear pattern (at least on the blue tube this appears to be the case), don't know how this would affect image quality?

In addition the Barco has a Moome HDMI 1.3 card installed. Not sure of the hours on the Barco, but would of course be able to get that info and go demo it (it's about an hours drive away from me).

In comparison the NEC has low wear, here are some pics I took a year or so ago but hasn't been used much since due to moving house and all:

The question is: would the Barco be a significant upgrade from the NEC, if at all? Did some checking of the charts and specs but since this Barco has been modified with other tubes it's hard to know.

Considering current market situation, what would be a fair price for it, considering shape of the tubes and the better lenses and Moome card?

Hope you guys can give me some pointers here, don't want to be spending a lot of money if it doesn't noticeably improves the image quality (and lowers the noise perhaps lol).

Cheers

Are you mental?

Go buy the barco! Wink

Edit: ok, details...the Barco will be sharper and brighter, and have more "depth". The colours won't be as nice. I'd still buy it though.

Thanks for the reply - care to elaborate? Smile

In the projector rankings, the 1208s is listed below the 110LC - then again this one has 9" tubes so I don't know what to make of it. Do not know how many hours it has on the chassi and current tubes either, or if I'd be needing to replace any tubes for good image quality? Definitely don't have the funds for that at the moment...

They're P19LUG tubes - doesn't mean much to me though, I don't know what the differences are.

So where does the Barco stand in comparison to my NEC? Asking price is about $1600 - how reasonable is that?

Those are high rez tubes...1080p could be a breeze.

The other big plus is that the Barco is quieter..

All you would need are colored C-elements or perhaps colored filters to put outside the lenses...

there's no such thing as a Moome HDMI card for Barco? Sounds like a Greg Eismann machine possibly?

Its not hard to do Drags, Walt did it. just add power, run RGBHV out and your set.

You're probably correct, it's an external moome box that's coming with it, not an internal.

So all agree that it's a big upgrade over the XG 110LC? Even if I don't intend to run 1080p since I don't have any 1080p sources anyway? Don't see any big changes happening in that respect anytime soon either, so I'll be running 720p most likely.

Is it worth around $1600 over the NEC? Simple fact is that it's hard to sell CRT's nowadays, so would not have a clue what I might get for the NEC when I sell that one on.... so for starters I'd have to count with being out of pocket $1600.

What about shape of the tubes as per pictures above? Lots of life left in 'm?

I'm not sure if I would move to the Barco unless you plan on running 1080p, and even then I'm not sure if it would be worth it. Your XG is color filtered, this makes a big difference in the picture, and that alone could be a reason not to upgrade, also with the P16 tubes in the XG it will do 1080p reasonably well, not as good as a 9" machine, but still a nice picture.

If the colored C-elements were still available for 9" machines I would go for it, but unless I was sure I had a way to get the red C-element I'd be tempted to pass.

I agree, the only place to find those elements now is from sony 1292 spent tubes, or any other 9 inch HD10 lens using PJ. But those who Know CRT's take them out and sell them a bit higher than those who know nothing and just want to sell a full tube.

Thanks for the replies - should have mentioned from start that I don't really (plan to) run 1080p here I guess. In addition to that I'm in the middle of the fan changing process with the NEC (see my other topics here and here) and it would be a bit of a pity to not give the beastie a go once the mod is done (and hopefully working ^^). Also want to continue looking into the difficulties I had with the green tube, as discussed in this topic. One big advantage is that I got contacts in the mean time, meaning that I can actually see sharp and do a good focus setup by myself Embarassed Smile
