I just aquired one of these projectors...and if it had a better green tube, I am quite certain that it would be a better projector than a Marquee. For one, the sharpness is absolutely better than a Marquee, and the colors are too. Add to that the ability to fine tune geometry to perfection...and I don't get why this projector is frowned upon. Does it fail a lot?

Can someone tell me what tubes are in it?

Also, this one has colored glycol...is that normal for a 3600?

(Not so loud, the prices will stop dropping as fast) These things are pieces of crap and everyone who has never owned one knows it! Pete has just tried to switch one on and failed Smile

Colored glycol is not from factory, but helps the colors a lot. I think tubes are MEC 180DVB. I wish I could see one with P16 tubes!

Like I said I always wanted an Ampro but fell into a Marquee. I think they do not have corner focus adjustments( Scheimflug)? not 100% on this, but you have to set it up so as not to need scheimflug . then you will get good corner focus.

In the past they said the HVPS failed a lot but the marquee has the same companies supply, keep it cool and it wont die is what i remember form my research on CRT's when I was first getting into them.

I'm pretty sure it has corner focus adjustment...I didn't do it yet, but I think I read that it's there in the manual.

I think a fresh green tube and no colored glycol, but HD144's...could make this thing a great pj.

The lenses may but not sure about the tube(Scheimflug).

TSE has a 3600. Maybe he'll chime in.

It's there but the implementation cut some corners. Instead of moving the C-element together with the lens, the Ampro moves only the lens and leaves the C-element stationary. I believe that this leads to less than optimal corner/edge focusing if much lens flapping is dialed in.

Nah, I have a bunch too. Smile

I've always said that the Ampro colors rivalled the NEC XGs, my all time favorite. BArcos and Marquees are flat compared to an Ampro, I don't care what you say. Smile

The Scheimpflug is similar to the Marquee 8500s, but the Ampro lacks astig control, so I guess the 3600 is more like a late model 8000, but with better colors.

I've seen plenty Ampros run to the point where the tubes are toast, so their lack of reliability is far overblown.

That is true for the 9" Ampros.

This is an 8" AC Ampro.

(Not that I have ever seen one..)

Right you are sir. Not sure how that didn't register when I was replying, but yes what I posted is only true for 9"LC ampros (as should be obvious by the C-element reference).

The 4600 is about on par with a Barco 1209 that also had no Scheimpflug adjustments..

There are air coupled Ampros and liquid coupled Ampros. The Scheimpflug system for AC units is as good as anyones. It can produce perfect scheimpflug adjustments. Ampro was a privately owned company (a small group) and didn't have or want to put the money into a flexable, liquid tight lens/"C" element system like in the Marquee. The C element is fixed relative to the phosphor plane of the tube, the lens moves for the Scheimpflug adjustments. Ok, what this means is the focus is not as good as it could be at the top of the picture when projector is table mounted. Back in the day the projectors were used for displaying computer/graphic images so that showed up when compairing different brand projectors. Very hard to see when displaying video, though. If the projector is ceiling mounted the less than optimum focus area is at the bottom of the screen and is in an area that is less important. There is a fault that can be picked at but in home theater applications it doesn't make that much difference.

Thanks for the explanation, Scott, and clearing up the air coupled adjustment capability. I do think it's an overblown problem with the LC units - how often is the edge or the corner of the picture even in focus in the source material?? Probably not very often. Ironic though, that the original purpose (graphics) would have exposed the flaw much more than our purposes (video).

I have a 3600HD set up in my shop that has smokin hot focus and color. I've had Heywood Jablome over to confirm that it was in fact resolving 1080P, much to our surprise.
The 2000/4000 series AmPros are where the problems are. The X600's are just fine.
