District 9 [Blu-ray] (2009)
Sony says 'District 9' will make its high-definition debut on December 29.
From producer Peter Jackson and director Neill Blomkamp comes a startlingly original science-fiction thriller where alien refugees, stranded on Earth, are exiled to a slum on the fringes of Johannesburg.
The Blu-ray will feature 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 video, a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 soundtrack, and supplements include: Metamorphosis: The Transformation of Wikus; Innovation: Acting and Improvisation; Conception and Design: Creating the World of District 9; and Alien Generation: Visual Effects.
The Blu-ray will also include: Director's Commentary; Joburg From Above: Satellite and Schematics of the World of District 9 - Interactive Map; Koobus Big Gun; The Alien Agenda: A Filmmaker's Log Three-Part Documentary; The Alien Agenda: A Filmmaker's Log - Chapter 3: Refining District 9; Cinechat; Sony's MovieIQ and BD-Live.
Plot synopsis:
Over twenty years ago, aliens made first contact with Earth. Humans waited for the hostile attack, or the giant advances in technology. Neither came. Instead, the aliens were refugees from their home world. The creatures were set up in a makeshift home in South Africa's District 9 as the world's nations argued over what to do with them.
Now, patience over the alien situation has run out. Control over the aliens has been contracted out to Multi-National United (MNU), a private company uninterested in the aliens' welfare. MNU will receive tremendous profits if they can make the aliens' powerful weaponry work. So far, they have failed; activation of the weaponry requires alien DNA.
The tension between the aliens and the humans comes to a head when MNU begins evicting the non-humans from District 9, with MNU field agents responsible for moving them to a new camp. One of the MNU field operatives, Wikus van der Merwe (Sharlto Copley), contracts an alien virus that begins changing his DNA. Wikus quickly becomes the most hunted man in the world, as well as the most valuable—he is the key to unlocking the secrets of alien technology. Ostracized and friendless, there is only one place left for him to hide: District 9.

I loved this movie overall, but felt it took a hit at about the 1/2 way point. I won't let any details out for those that haven't seen it, but I thought it turned from a great flick into a Mad Max type movie.

|Fantastic movie. Very un-Hollywood and some great underlying messages. I thought the transition through the film kept my interest and integrated well. The soundtrack was excellent too. I hope they make the sequel 'District 10', which was eluded to throughout the 2nd half of the movie.

Very good...Had a very realistic feel to it. Kind of like Cloverfield.

So, this turned out to be a good movie. I'd have watched it this past weekend, but the USPS decided to either keep it for themselves, or give it to someone else. Tracking number said they delivered at lunch time on Saturday, but the only thing in our box was junk mail. Their end suggestion? Accept their apology and that is it. SOL.

Meh. I was disappointed. Expectations were too high I guess.
Main character reminded me of Shaun of the Dead and The Office... a little too quirky to be taken seriously, but not enough to be funny.
The effin main character also said more effin F words than any effin movie I think I've ever effin seen. Count 'em double if you have subtitles turned on. Count em 4x if you're watching with your 2 boys.

Bummer, Clarence. I was looking forward to this one. I'll still watch it, but my expectations are lowered significantly. Maybe that will help.

I think I usually enjoy movies more when I have low expectations.
My youngest son picked out Land of the Lost on Blu-Ray at Blockbuster a couple of weeks ago. I don't think my expectations could've been any lower. But I laughed all the way through it.
