Rant off.... |
Chip, Did you buy Gary's 1209s? |
What gave it away? Was it the "butchery" comment
No, it wasn't Gary's 1209/S. It was a E-home It took me three days to bring it back to factory and clean up the mess. Then I gave it away.
Kal,
Not you, Curt, Dragan, The president of the US or God himself is going to change my opinion of mods for profit.
It is my opinion and I'm schticking to it. |
Chip are all of your cars completely "Bone Stock"?
NOT all mods are good, but when tested, tried, and approved. You can have improvements over stock.

By having it OVER the connector they'll be force to read/remove it before plugging it in. They always put stickers/text right on commercial products where it matters for those people that never read the manual so that this way they're at least forced to read something minimal.
I bet the people that did this have no idea that the pinout is important or matters. Why would they? They don't know electronics.

Well in the disassembly/re-assembly PDF there are warnings. The very first one on top of page is "if you have trouble follwing instructions then hire a pro" Also, it specifically mentions connectors
22) Make sure all 6 connectors are plugged in so that all 4 pins are engaged in the connector, DOUBLE CHECK THIS. If you are off to one side and skip a pin it will blow the channel out on the CVA.
23) Unlike the VDM scan reversal connectors. The CVA connectors only go one way and cannot be installed upside down
24) Reconnect Ribbon cables
25) IF you have a 1995 to 97, reconnect the White ground wire to the Vertical board.
I think what's happened this week is it got darker outside and people are trying to re-assemble their machines in dark home theaters poor lighting or no lighting. Kal we will definitely need to add 1 or 2 more pics with big RED lines through incorrectly connected cables. With a Caption of "DON"T DO THIS" |
That's not good enough since you're ASSUMING people are going to re-read the instructions when they go to re-assemble which is probably not usually the case. Yes, people may have read the instructions when they first took out the boards but when they get their boards back they're just anxious to get it all up running again to see the difference so they skip the instructions. They already took it apart right? So they simply throw it all back together and make sure that everything seems to "fit". If a connector "fits" it's probably good enough right?
This is why you need to tape pieces of paper over the connectors which FORCES them to read the instructions. Saying something like "STOP! READ THE RE-ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS FIRST AVAILABLE AT WWW.CURTPALME.COM/MARQUEEHDMODS.SHTM! PLUGGING THIS CONNECTOR IN INCORRECTLY WILL DESTROY YOUR PROJECTOR!" on a small piece of paper taped over the ribbon connectors will scare the crap out of someone such that they'll actually go and read it.
Writing something extra in the document they read a month ago during disassembly will do nothing and not help. Trust me on this.
Again, this is EXACTLY why real companies put pull stickers and other warnings on consumer electronics where some sort of special attention has to be taken such that their products CAN'T be used until a special action is taken. You can't write in the manual on page 3 that "you shouldn't plug in your new box until you've done a certain procedure first" as a large percentage of people will buy your product, take it out of the box and plug it in. The manual's what many people refer to in case it doesn't work as they expect when you first plug it in.

Kal | alright, I will do this. hopefully they don't just ignore the paper and short out the board with it. Funny thing is we had maybe a dozen sets or close to and not a single problem with re-assembly. Now 2 people in 2 days.

I've never understood why manufacturers cheaped out on connecters like this... The open pins might be fine for development prototypes, but even on high-end technical hardware, people can still get rushed, work in tight/difficult/low-light locations (ceiling?), etc. Why not design the hardware to remove the potential for error - especially when the cost is negligible? Why not spend the extra .25 or whatever and put a keyed socket on the board instead of the bare pins and completely eliminate any possibility of error?!
That's just a stupid design decision, IMHO.

SC | who knows what kind of pressure the design team was under, the very first 1993 Marquee 8000 was definitely not ready for prime time. They actually did add guides to the Convergence board yoke leads in second half of 1998, but you can still put the ribbon cables on wrong.
I think it's important to remember that only factory trained tech's were ever supposed to work on these. I am sure the original design team would be shocked to learn that 14 years later the machines are still around, being re-built, and owned by people in private homes.
Looks like my customer might have only blown a fusible resistor, which isn't too bad. He was very gracious about it and didn't point any fingers so I'll be glad to help him too.
