Keep in mind that Vista/7 are fundamentally different in driver-->hardware operation as the manufacturer's software no longer has direct control over said hardware. M$ placed the blame on a lot of the early Vista problems on ATI and Nvidia, but how can you blame them for not being able to directly control their own hardware?

Understood guys. I'm using windows 7 RTM (release to manufacture) and ATI catalyst 9.9 drivers for windows 7. I'm not dogging ATI or Microsoft, I'm just trying to figure out how to get 16x9 aspect ratios other than 1080p and 720p. I don't find it unreasonable to expect that to work on release, but that's not what this thread is about either.
Thanks.

tried a powerstrip demo and was able to get 1600x900 @72hz. well, at least I know it's possible in windows 7 now.

Would this be of any use to you : http://www.videoi.com/~pietro/monitor/
Actually, I have an ATI HD4350 and an old Dell monitor that isn't supposedly capable of 1080p at 72Hz won't allow me to set that as a resolution, so I just went into Device Manager, Update Driver and changed the monitor driver manually to a Sony GW900, then un-checked the "Hide Modes Not Supported" and could then choose the 1920x1080 at 72Hz mode in the "List all Modes" list. Easy peasy...
Forgot to ad, Win7 retail, x86 OS, newest Catalyst drivers
