Over the weekend installed windows 7 on my htpc (after a full backup of course). Got everything to work, including BD playback. Media Portal is working great.
So far so good! (fingers crossed)
I do have to figure out how to change my monitor so it'll let me do 1080p though.

I'm guessing you are limited to 1600x1200 on your monitor?
See if you can follow this, I don't remember the process completely but this is a basic summary of how I got 1080p working for me.
Go to "screen resolution"
Go to "properties" of the display you want to modify
Go to "monitor tab"
Go to "properties?" of monitor
Go to "drivers" tab
Go to "update driver"
Click on option "let me choose a driver" or something like that
Uncheck box that says "show compatible drivers"
Now you should have a long list of drivers, I went down the list to "Sony Corporation" and then chose the driver for the GDM FW-900.
Reboot and you should be able to select 1080p
Make sure the drivers for you video card are up to date, or this could cause problems.
Hope this helps,
Erik

There is talk that students can get Windows 7 (RTM) very, very cheap (<<$99), but if you want a full version for a virgin PC it'll cost us rich folks $300. I'd give it a more permanent try, but not for $300.

Yeah, I heard students can get it for $30. Why don't you sign up for a class at your local college, buy the software then drop out and get your refund?

I heard that too, I believe all you need is a college email address, I have a few friends in college right now who won't be using 7. I think I'll ask them to pick it up for me, well as long as there is no funny business with it.

I tried this and it worked, but it doesn't allow me to select 72hz, only 24, 25, 60, etc. Anyone know how to get 72hz? should I try a different driver?
Thanks!

Does it give you the option to change the default refresh rate in the monitor properties?
You may need powerstrip to get the timings right, but in my experience powerstrip doesn't always play nice with Windows 7, or Media Center.

The standard slider in the display options wouldn't go over 1440x900 in either windows or ati catalyst. I had to uncheck the "hide modes that cannot be displayed" box and manually set it in the monitor properties. just don't have the other refresh options I had in xp. I'll try a different driver maybe.

I tried powerstrip and it didn't work too well. I tried to set it to 1080p and the screen got all noisy and unrecognizable. Ended up uninstalling it.

If its open to faculty and staff I may work through my little women.

Why don't we just start our own university? Register a .edu domain name and enroll everyone on the forum who wants to take classes.

I'm not sure, but I think we might have a spot of trouble with the accreditation process...

Like I alluded to above, you have to be a nationally accredited post-secondary institution to register a .edu domain. Too bad. No cheap copy of Windows 7 for you!

So, I get the sony driver installed. It's list in the advance properties. Although windows still says it's detecting a dell lcd. I can select 720 and 1080 in the advanced graphic properties, but all the 16x9 resolutions are gone! 1440x900 for instance.
I just cannot get 16x9 resolutions in windows 7. I don't want to buy powerstrip. This should be easy to do, shouldn't windows 7 support hdtv resolutions?

Not to defend Windows 7, but could this be a video driver problem, as opposed to a Windows 7 problem?
I know on my office Thinkpad with ATI graphics, running XP, I've tried EVERYTHING I can to get it to drive my Dell 2408WFP, and it always goes into the stupid "scrolling mode" at anything beyond 1600x1200 or whatever... I can't get it to do 1920x1200. Period. I've tried everything, I think. Obviously, that's not Windows' fault - it's an ATI driver or hardware issue.

Your right, Crabb. I also think people should not be critical of driver support in 7 until it is actually released. I am not dogging on akajester, but I have seen people complaining that they have issues with 7 and various hardware. It doesn't seem right to complain about an aftermarket manufacturers support of a product that isn't even shipping yet.
