|
|
I know there are a lot of Bose bashers in here so this is a loaded question. I need a pair of bookshelf speakers for my office. Right now after reading the reviews I'm leaning towards the Bose 301 Series V for about $330 after shipping. Anyone had any personal experience with anything better in this price range?

Bash...bash.. ANYTHING WOULD BE BETTER.. Actually I've had BOSE 901, 501s, 301s so I'm not a qualified basher. I do like the Polk Lsi 7's that can be had from the polkdirect as refurb in your price range. Here's a link to a recent auction. I've bought Lsi9 and Lsi7's and you couldn't tell them from new. The one consideration with the Lsi's is that they are not especially efficient so your amp should probably be something like 60 watts or better.

As others have said, you can do better. Having been a pro Bose dealer for years, their consumer stuff for the most part is complete crap.
If you want new, $330 should get you twice the speaker with something like Energy, Paradigm, Boston Acoustics, etc. If you want to spend $100 on something used, you can do even better. Go to CL and go audition something. Speakers never hold their value unless they are classic vintage, so something worth $400 new can be had for under $100 used. Make sure that the speakers aren't blown or have foam rot, but unless abused, speakers should last 20-25 years at least.

I've been salivating over the Lsi9s since you posted the link. What's the deal though? The Lsi9 looks to be the same speaker as the Lsi15? Same way with the Energy C-200 I just bought. It looks to be the same speaker as the C300. Is there any audio difference or are you just buying the bookshelf speaker with a built-in speaker stand?

The Lsi15 or LSi25 are basically the Lsi9 on top with a built in powered subwoofer as a single floorstanding unit. The Lsi15 has an 8" sub and the Lsi25 has a 10" sub. Neither one is a bookshelf unit even though the top section is a merged Lsi9.

I got the C200s in 2 days ago and they sound really good. VERY impressive considering I only spent $160 including shipping. I have been using a pair of Bose 701s but they sound like someone threw a blanket over them when compared to these Energys.
Now, I have a 10" passive sub that I'm powering with a 500watt subwoofer panel amp. I think I'm going to see what it sounds like if I use these 701s for subs. They are series 1 Bose so they each have 2 8" drivers that face each other inside. Just to check my wiring . . .
Positive terminial on amp to positive terminal on Spkr 1, Negative terminal on speaker 1 to positive terminal on speaker 2, negative terminal on speaker 2 to negative terminal on amp.
Right?
