What an incredibly labor-intensive process! Do/did they really still use that much manual hand-work? There was almost no automation in that whole process. Even hooking up a signal to test it at the end, they used individual clips instead of a plug that connected all pins at once. The whole thing had the feel of a one-off custom process instead of a production line.

I think maybe that show picks assembly process examples with a lot of hand work, because they do a ton of stuff like that - it seems impossible that it was all done by hand.

I know that way back in the day we made a big custom machine that manipulated and tested shadow masks for CRTs, and that they had multiple lines running, and it was very, very automated.

My friend and I made some fun observations about How It's Made... like, the people doing stuff are:

-A worker
-A craftsman
-An expert
-An artist

I think it'd be funny if they did the management side of things, too. "First, an executive chooses a product line to produce. Now, a marketer creates a powerpoint presentation..."

Kal, do you have a CRT-projector fundamentals topic? This movie should go there.

THere was another program like this that showed the process of making a CRT as well. IT looks rather simple, so maybe someone can start up cheap tube production.Smile

This one is very interesting as well, at least in the later part where they disassemble the CRT itself.

The CRT's faceplate is separated from the bell glass by means of a hot wire. Then the phosphor coating
is vacuumed out of the faceplate. Very neatly done.
