|
|
I just purchased a Runco DTV-943 and need some help configuring the projector. I know there is a set up menu to change the orientation from ceiling to table mount, but I cannot find it. I have down loaded the manual, but am still stuck. Here is the sequence of steps that I have done so far.
ADJ
ADJUST MODE / ENTER
SERVICE / ENTER
PROJECTOR SET-UP / ENTER
IDENTIFICATION / ENTER
A screen comes up that shows information. Umder CONFIG. It show front /
When I hit the up arrow, I get a warning message that say WARNING INVALID KEY ENTRY. O.K. So this screen is for information only. Where is the screen that allows me to change the orientation from ceiling to table. I will keep looking, but any help will be appreciated. After I get the image flipped, the next step is to converge the colors. The blue is way off.
Another basic question - How good is this projector? Is it work fooling with. I did not pay much for it and thought it would be fun to play with. It is my only projector. After I get it calibrated, there is still a lot to do. Mounting it, buy a screen, figure out how best to connect to it, etc.
Thanks in advance for any and all help.
I am watching tennis upside down, pretty funny.

Thanks for the reply.
When I open the case, I do not see any boards as shown in the picture. Do I have to life the top board first?

You do have to lift some boards:
Curt sent you the link to the page where the picture of the switch is (assuming that you knew where to find it).
You should start reading the "Layout and Setup Tips" from page one:

No, there are no switches, you need to swap the 6 connectors under the middle board as well as the 3 on the convergence output board.

And unplugged. I can't remember if there are any parts that are "live" on a 7xx chassis, but I do know on an 808 chassis, the EHT board has voltage going through it even when its off, if its still plugged in. I can attest to that from experience...

Thanks for all of the replys. I will need to evaluate the task to make sure that I can perform the swapping of the connectors without damaging anything.
I must admit that the effort to install, connect, and calibrate this projector is more than I expected. Can someone give me some encouragement. Is it worth it - or should I just sell it a buy a new one.
Any of you happen to live in Phoenix?
Thanks again for your help. I am certain I will need a lot of help with this projector.

Dan | Well first off forget Runco, the only thing Runco is the black paint job. What you have is a Barco 700 series and if it's working properly then, it is most definitely worth setting up. Choosing the right screen is very important as CRT's are not light cannons. You'll also need a pretty dark room and a $100. Fury DVI to RGB adapter so you can plug in your blue ray player. Set up the projector properly on the right screen and set the BD player to 1080i and you will be rewarded with an excellent picture.
Of course this takes a lot of reading and learning which is beyond the attention span of the average joe-schmo. If you have the patience, like building computers, or fiddling with electronics then you'll be fine. Some assistance is always good and There's quite a few CRT guys down in that hellhole, errrr i mean Phoenix, but I don't personally know any Barco guys. Each make is different, and knowing Marquee's for instance is only marginally helpful to setting up a Barco.
there is an Andrew Smiley who claims to be a Barco whiz in Peoria (my old hometown), check the referral list

Thanks for the advice and the referral list. As far as screens are concerned, I have been researching them for a few months. The Da-Lite high power sounds like it would work well. The one thing that I need to figure out is how to mount the projector low enough to take advantage of this screen. What screens work well with CRTs? Here a a few details on my room.
Size: 20 ft X 20 ft.
Light: Controlled
Seating: Presently two rows, but that could change if required.
First row: Approx 11 ft. from screen.
Second row: Approx 16 feet from screen.
Back to changing the electrical connectors. I opened the hood of the projector last night. Loosened the two screws holding the circuit boards and pivoted the boards up. So far, not too complex. The wires going to the RUNCO light are in the way. What is the best way to unplug them? Looks like unplugging the connector at the circuit board would allow me to open the cover and rotate the circuit board all of the way. Does any one see any problem doing this? I am going to take pictures as I go along.

Barco 7xx's(which is what you have, its a Barco 708 in all aspects except the name plate) take component natively, you won't need any DVI/HDMI converters, just use component 1080i out of your HD devices. Your projector *might* just scan high enough to "do" 1080p, but since its an electrostatic focus projector, its going to look sharper if you use 1080i anyway.
There won't be any problem if you unplug a connector in order to pivot the board up to the proper place. Simply replace the plug the way you found it. Pull the plug, not the wires, of course...
CRT projectors are not "plug and play" but are capable of making very satisfying images. Only you will be able to tell if its worth YOUR time to learn how to set it up and use it. Most of us here find the "hobby" aspect the most engrossing. If you want to just plunk something down and use it, without any other input from you, perhaps a nice cheap digital is more attractive to you.
Read the setup tips, and more importantly the Installation manual for your projector (Barco Graphics 708/701s). They can be found on this site, all the information you require about placement is in those manuals. Use the "Guided" setup option when you finally get to setting it up for a screen, it walks you through just about everything you need to know...

Just peel the Runco light sticker off... if it's like mine, it'll stick back on no problem afterwards.

Take pictures with a digital camera before you unplug stuff, its great for review when you are holding a connector in your hand wondering where the hell you pulled it from.

Dan | room looks fine, if you have vaulted ceilings like most AZ home you will need a special mount which drops the PJ down on a metal pole. There was a Barco mount on e-bay recently, keep an eye out there. Even if you can find the standard low-profile mount and have any shop fabricate the drop-down portion. Still cheaper than making one from scratch.
Elaine is right the Barcos will take component in but I seem to recall people saying the internal transcoders to turn component into RGBHV weren't very good. Running digital theough your AVR receiver and then right up the PJ might yield a slightly better pic and is simpler too.

Thanks to everyone for the help. I now have the image displaying vertically (not upside down). Sorry it took me so long to reply, but I have not been feeling so great - just a cold. Now I feel better and have been playing with the projector.
Now I need help converging the lenses. Should I continue with this post or start a new one. I thought about getting someone to come and set the projector up, but I am trying to keep the cost low. As long as everyone doesn't mine me asking lots of questions, I think I can get the image looking a lot better.

Do you ahve the manuals downloaded? The BArcos are really well written. The only thing they don't state clearly is that you need a live input signal going to the set while converging it, and use the 'genlocked' test pattern while setting it up.

I am trying to align the Red, Green, and Blue tubes. Page 7-8 of the Barco Data 708 Installation Manual shows four hexagon screws. The two at the top are obvious. But, I do not see the two at the bottom. The drawing is pointing to a square cutout for the bottom screws. Looking inside the square cutout, I do not see a hex screw. Do I need to access the screws from the bottom?

I am trying to adjust the red and blue lenses to line them up. I have the Barco Data 708 Installation Manual. On page 7-8 the instructions says to loosen four screws per lens. Two on the top and two on the bottom. I see the ones on the top, but not the ones on the bottom. I took some pictures in an attempt to show what I am looking at. The first picture shows the top screws. The second picture is a shot looking down towards the bottom. I see what looks like a knurled piece, but no screw. Can any body offer any advice?
