Hi everyone,
I'm very interested in getting into the display calibration business. Please excuse me if I'm in the wrong place, but I need info on what I need in the way of training and equipment. I am pertty savvy with electronics and have extensive knowledge of Home Theater systems and procedures. I am a very quick study and any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again and I love your forum.

Hi Jeremy,
Thanks for the help. Will do just that. I've been lurking for a couple of days now and just thought I'd get after it now. I've really been looking at the Chroma 5 as a starter for me just to learn the ropes with. What do you think. Or should I get something more pedestrian to start? Let me know what you think. I'll type to you later I'm sure so until then, have a better one. Thanks again for the welcome to the forum.

The Chroma 5 is definitely a nice meter. It's the lowest priced pro-grade meter out there. Wait a day and check back to the main page of www.curtpalme.com as I'm just about to announce some big news on new Chroma 5 packages and sales that I just found out about this morning.

Hi Kal,
Thanks for the info and I'll definitely check in tomorrow for that news. I am ready to purchase a meter to practice on my displays so I welcome any deals that may be to have out there. Was reading about the Get Grey software on the AVS forum. Thinking about downloading and burning to supplement the CalMan software. Is that necessary? Thanks again for the info. Hi ho, hi ho, I'm off to the salt mine. Type to you later.

Some sort of calibration pattern source is needed - we have a free one you can download. (For example, see the Chroma 5 here: http://www.curtpalme.com/ChromaPure_Chroma5.shtm)

I have studied your “greyscale & colour calibration for dummies” and based on this I am trying to calibrate my Panasonic plasma TH-50PY80AZ (New Zealand model) but the TV does not have RGBlowend and RGBhighend controls, so I cannot proceed past brightness and contrast. I will be using both the Calman and Eye1 pro for the process.

Is there any way I can adjust the necessary parameters without accessing the service menu? I also have a DVDO VP50 and Calman can drive its built in test patterns, but I cannot see any way to adjust brightness/contrast of each primary on the TV or in the VP50.

I tried contacting panasonic to get the necessary information, but they did not bother to respond.

Many thanks in advance.

Your best bet is to poke around calibration forums and ask other Panasonic plasma TH-50PY80AZ users as to where the controls are hidden. Unless you can get at the RGBlowend and RGBhighend controls (or their equivalent) there's not much you can do. For most consumer grade displays (like yours) they're hidden in service menus.

Hey Kal,
I'm ready to purchase my meter. As I told you before that I was considering the Chroma 5 for a starter. Well I may be lucky enough to get the EyeOne Pro also. Any bundle deals for both meters if purchased together? If so let me know or send me the info to mr_freedom@comcast.net. I'd appreciate the help. I'm trying to pull the trigger before weeks end so the wife can't reconsider and say I'm spending too much. Laughing Anyway your help is greatly appreciated.

Yeah, it's a beaatch sometimes but she's a keeper. I did catch her on a good day but she's been questioning me ever since so I have to get this done quickly. She has a penchant for changing her mind or finding a way to spend the money herself (don't they all?). With any luck, I'll have ordered before she comes to her senses. Laughing Have a better one.

Oh I just get "the look" when I drop money on a toy/car/HT piece that my G/F does't think I need. She quieted down when I gave her a D50 and 110" screen. Now she's hinting for her own PS3. Laughing

Yeah, I picked up my sound meter a couple weeks ago and she was like, "What do you need that for?" Then she goes into a sermon about she doesn't understand why I need a sound meter to calibrate TVs. I don't say anything, just get home and calibrate my audio. The next night we put on "The Chronicles of Riddick" and afterward I hear her tell one of her girl friends to come over and watch "Shakespeare in Love" on our new sound system. She knows it rocks. Can't wait to completely calibrate my plasma (have done the DVE thing already but no meters). You're right, they don't like it until they get it and then it's all because of them, don't ya know. Laughing

Using the two meters together is a very popular choice.

P.S. My wife's pretty forgiving but I always find it easier to ask for forgiveness than permission. Wink She's also got an eagle eye... last time I brought home some tiny little control box (a bass management box) and had it pretty much hidden away in the back room she still found it and wondered what it was an why we needed it. I'm looking at the special right now. It's about $200-$300 over my limit but I'm gonna lobby hard for the setup. If I don't get both , I may just start with the Eyeone Pro enthusiast setup (kind of like the Chroma 5 though). Now, is the entusiast software upgradeable to the pro when I'm ready to take the leap commercially? I haven't read anywhere that says it is. That's another consideration for me as I do plan on carrying this to the field. Thanks again Kal. You continue to be a great help.

PS: If I held the purse strings we'd been broke long ago because of my penchant for big boy toys. But I do get the forgiveness thing. Have spent a few well deserved nights in the guest room over the years!! Laughing

Okay Kal,
How are you. I'm fine but ran into some home breakdowns which has drastically cut down my purchasing power. I swear the house knows when I have extra money because whenever I do, It seems to want half. It's worse than my wife. Anyhow, I'm now down to the point where I'm looking at the Chroma 5 home edition to start. I'll have to work my way up to the Eye1 Pro. Now if you were me, would you get the Chroma 5 home or the Spyder3 enthusiast? I'm leaning hard to the Chroma but wanted your opinion as I know the enhanced Spyder has just came out and I can't find much info on the comparison. Your help, as always, is greatly appreciated. Also, any refurbished deals around? Thanks again.

The Chroma 5 is a better meter. It's also now compatible with LED based displays and goes up in price by $100 at the end of the month because of it. Given the choice between the two I'd definitely go with the Chroma 5.

See our latest newsletter for details here: http://www.curtpalme.com/newsletters/Newsletter_Sep_8_2009.shtm

Also see my "Which meter is right for me?" FAQ where I outline the differences: https://www.curtpalme.com/forum_archived/viewtopic.php@t=11436.html

Will do Kal. Believe me, this won't be the last you hear from me. I'll probably lean on you a bit while learning the ropes, if that's okay. If not, you have already been a great help to me and you are very appreciated. Wish nothing but aces for you. See ya a little way down the trail. Thanks again.
