Can you throw out convergence and make everything 3D?

Hi,

Surely this is not possible, but then again, what do I know?

I have the Blu Ray of Coraline and it's the first time I have a disc with a 3D version of the movie. I have seen the movie the 2D was multiple times (I like it) so I thought it was safe to have a look at the 3D thingie.

I understand that polarized 3D that you find in movies and Imax is superior to this older Red/Green glasses stuff but I also remember those strangely colored 3D photos of yesteryear and it's still "neat". I know it thows out color fidelity and the effect has a way of going out of whack from time to time but I see it as merely a fun bonus.

So... taking the glasses off I see what looks just like the 2d version with bad convergence. So... Am I just silly or could you throw convergence off and have this type of 3D for everything??

No, the 3D red/blue "misconvergence" varies dynamically based on the perceived depth.

Intentional, mechanical misconvergence would be static... same amount across all scenes... no perceived depth.

I sort of thought that would be the case.

Thanks,

Blazing with friends, getting the munchies, and watching mis-converged p0rn with the red/blue glasses could be good for an evening tho!
