I have also just discovered that vista will stream to a ps3 w/o using a different software i.e. tversity.
i have been using it for a few days and it's rock solid!

Wan, did you know you can download trailers from the PS3 store? Just plug your PS3 into your LAN and log in. You can download trailers, game demos, lotsa stuff.
John: Hm. I've been streaming off a LaCie NAS that supports the TwonkyVision media server. That works well since my computers aren't always on, but the NAS is. But Twonky is a bit flaky so I'll have to keep Vista in mind...

I was using Tversity and i kept getting DNLA errors. So i did some searching and found that i could stream directly thru vista.... a few clicks, and no worries!

You don't even need Vista, guys - It's WMP11 or 12 that is serving up the media. WMP11 even on XP can act as a DLNA server for any DLNA clients you have in the house.

Yeah, the only problem is Sony puts a new trailer up in the PS3 store about once a month... if you're luck. There are only a couple dozen and those bastards are OLD! In contrast, there are new HD trailers on the Apple site every day.
The only downside with the Apple trailers is you have to remove the mp4 program stream from the mov wrapper to be able to play on the PS3, so you either need QuickTime Pro ($30), or you need to use one of the open source tools available. There's a thread on it if you do some searching around here.
The cool thing, though is that the trailers are typically pretty nice quality 1080p. Not quite Blu-ray quality, but very close. Some even have multichannel audio, which plays back that way if you have an HDMI AVR/prepro.

Gary, I know about the movie trailers on Sony's website, but SC is talking about trailers from Apple. Sony's biggest failure of the online PS3 is its inability to provide lots of trailers of movies and shows they they already own.
I think Sony has this belief system where instead of asking what their cowsumers want, they simply apply 80 year old stuffy SOBs' to think for the world. Idiots they are. And this isn't to praise Apple, but at least they do a hell of a lot better job at movie trailers than the fantasies of Sony suits.

I honestly did not know you could save movie trailers off of Apple's website. I have used the USB port for a thumbdrive for JPEG images off of the wife's Nikon, but that is about it. |
Ok, you have to pay for the Quicktime Pro and then you can save. Now, I'm assuming that this means you 'can' save trailers from Apple's website, but just noting a Save and Save As QT Pro functionality doesn't necessarily mean so.

I'd sell it for that kind of money.

I originally thought the Linux feature would be cool, but I haven't even attempted it yet, and doubt I ever will. Why? Because I have three good working computers in addition to the wife's three computers.
Heck, I'd sell my 60GB version for $450.

This guy had an ad on Craigslist looking for like-new 60GB PS3 consoles with all the oem accesories and packaging. He would pay top $. I don't play games much less PS1 & 2 games so I took the money.
I'm wondering if the 60GB PS3 (or maybe any original PS3) may become even more sought after since Sony will only be making the Slim now. People tend to want what is hard to find.

I have been using a software called "PlayOn" to interface my computer to the PS3's in the house. It works great. I can stream direct from Netflix, ESPN, Hulu and also I can play videos, view pictures and play songs off of my computer. It has worked well so far.

Well maybe there is another good reason to buy the Slim. I have never seen the TrueHD or DTS-HD MA indicators light-up on my Onkyo TX-NR906. Maybe that was why.
I purchased a Slim to put in my HT. I have the components in a closet and the cooler runner Slim should help a bit. Amazon sent me a message yesterday it will arrive between Sept. 08 ~ 14. So much for a 1st delivery.

Amazon complained last week that there would be supply issues, but Sony said they were wrong. I guess Amazon didn't gauge the public reaction for the slim and was a bit slim on early wholesale orders.

I read many articles that says that Fat PS3 doesn't do a good job converting HD sound in LPCM. Much people says that comparing HD audio between PS3 and any other player with bitstream capability the PS3 is really really worse.
What do you think?
I moved to UK and My HT is sitting quietly in Italy so I sold my PS3 and I'll buy a slim one when I'll have an HT again. Hope to have done the right thing...
