So, I was selling a couple of plasma monitors on CL, right? Sold 'em, but another guy who does a lot of random electronics stuff emailed about it. We ended up striking up a conversation about electronics, and I mentioned my home theater bug, and the extra projectors I have, including those digitals and the carcass of the Pro 900x.

Anyway, he replies back:

Quote:
I also have an old 3 CRT barco projector, if you ever feel like having a 600 pound gorilla fall out of the ceiling and onto your head. I think I have the rack mount controller for that and about 50' of the funky video cable it uses. That one is so big I know where it is. Hard to miss if you know what I mean. I should chuck the projector and use the plywood box it's in for a chicken house or something productive.

Naturally, I shot back a reply asking what model it is, and the car is outside idling. So, vote in the poll - what is it? Will I suck, or is this just a red herring? Time will tell...

I'm sitting here checking my email every five minutes. It's like if somebody emailed a hardcore drug user saying, "Oh, yeah, I've got a big-ass bag of crack rock out in the shed... I should toss it and save the space" Mr. Green

Damn, it won't let me add that to the poll. Oh well...

I'd LOL if it was a Marquee... not sure I could bring myself to put something that ugly in my car, though... Twisted Evil

I voted 808 mint or a 1208, lets have the 808 be the same as a 1208 and the 909 be a 1209 as well.

Well, I heard back from him. Apparently the thing's crate is under his coffee table in his 'other' house (?!) which he might or might not get down to in the next week. I asked him if we could arrange something for me to take a look directly. But if it's under a coffee table, in a crate, either he's got one big-ass coffee table or it's not a 9-incher.

I also asked how he came by it - which might be interesting. Given that there are a couple of big universities in town, and that it has a rack of stuff, I suspect it's got academic provenance. That could mean anything from mint and barely used to a roasted-in windows 3.1 login, so... looks like I'll have to hold my breath a bit longer. Smile

Hey, if it does have a windoze logo burned into it, I have a computer with 3.11 installed on it that I can donate to the cause. Wink

I like your idea that he said it was a Barco and really it's a Marquee, though. Or a G90. Fill me in - is it even worth taking crated and minty G90s anymore? Wink

Nah... its not worth it... but there's some guy up in Canada who will give you $50-$75 bucks for a G90... sometimes more if it isn't too beat up, and you throw in the crate, and pack it well and ship it to him at your expense. Very Happy

Doesn't look like my dreams of suckage will come true this time. The guy writes back:

Quote:
The barco if I remember right will do the lower res high def standard. I bought that one on ebay back when I lived at that house and was going to do the living room up nice. I had plans for an almost wall to wall slightly curved screen. The edges would have been soft but I think the overall look would have been cool. Anyway, we wound up moving out to the sticks and now I have more then enough to amuse me. The poor thing has been sitting since 1998 or so.

So, assuming the original ebay listing was honest, that could mean anything from a Data 600 (1080i and 30khz) to a Cine7 (720p/1080i and 75khz).

It could theoretically refer to anything up to and including a Cine8 Onyx, which can't really fully resolve 1080p, but it seems unlikely someone would refer to that as doing the 'lower res high def standard'! And the guy doesn't seem like a technical idiot, so it's pretty unlikely he's sitting on some Cine9 he bought by accident.

I suppose the best I can hope for practically is a Cine7, though I must say that I've always thought it would be awesome to have a Cine6...

Curt, what Barcos do you need boards/tubes from? Given that you just acquired an ever-loving f*ckton of 808s, and other stuff is out of vogue, not much... but then you did buy some Pro900x bits from me, so you never know. If there's a chassis you're looking for boards out of specifically, I'll snag it even if the tubes are toasty.

I'm trying to work something out with him to see the PJ on Sunday. He says he's going to make me take some big honkin' (not-starting-up) RPTV in order to get the PJ... I'm guessing it's one of those big square NTSC f*ckers with fake wood sides, and if I ever made it work it'd have the Duck Hunt score screen burned in to the top. It might make a good chandelier if I can get the tubes to light up, though, and I could use the screen to... uh... something...

I'm honestly a bit more excited about the cabling and rack kit he mentioned than I am about the PJ at this point! A really nice 50' RGBHV run would stroke my oars just fine right now. And there's always room in my heart for video processing kit... maybe a nice Fuhroojee whazamajigger to upscale the ol' Tivo Series II s-video output... Cool

If its been sitting since 1998, assuming normal asset disposal guidelines, its likely AT LEAST a 1993 or older machine, which pretty much eliminates anything decent...but hopefully I'm wrong...

I'll take anything HV related to the Barcos, quads, splitters and EHT boards, and any EM focusing tubes that are decent. I've got reds, but need G and B.
