My Pioneer receiver keeps shutting down. I am looking at Pioneer service centers in the VA, DC and MD areas. I have no clue if one shop is better or worse than the other.
Below is a list. But, is there anybody in the VA, DC or MD area that someone might recommend from this list, or another place?
DUMAS ELECTRONIC CO
3131 DRAPER DR
FAIRFAX, VA 22031
ELECTRONIC CLINIC
4916 DEL RAY AVE
BETHESDA, MD 20814
WASHINGTON ELECTRONICS
2932 PATRICK HENRY DR
FALLS CHURCH, VA 22044
PROFESSIONAL TECHNICAL SERVICE
12110 TECH ROAD
SILVER SPRING, MD 20904
STRAUSS PHOTO-TECHNICAL SVC
1240 MOUNT OLIVET RD NE
WASHINGTON, DC 20002
Thanks.

Fort Meyer TV in Vienna did a great job repairing several devices after a power surge a year or so ago. I doubt they are authorized Pioneer service shop, but I don't know if that's important to you.

I wish it was, but that's just my luck; something breaks shortly after warraty runs out.

It is the VSX 92-TXH.
About the only thing I can find talking about the fix is this: http://www.avrev.com/forum/receivers/2015-pioneer-elite-2.html.
All ideas are welcome!
Thanks Mac!

Have you tried running it with nothing connected? Does it still shut down? Does it say anything on the display?
I'm assuming you've had it for more then 2 years?

Haven't tried running with nothing hooked up.
When it does shutdown, the display stays where it was before the shutdown.
Also, maybe I should clarify in my wording of "shut down". The unit does not actually "shut down" or power off. It just freezes at the state it is in. (Sorry for the mistake.) I cannot change inputs, turn the unit off, turn the volume down (or up); nothing. All controls on the front panel and remote are dead; nothing works.
I have to unplug the unit and what for 3-10 minutes.
It is not over heating as it will freeze up even when sitting on the floor (concrete floor) and the ambient temp in the room is about 70 degrees F.
And for the warranty, well, I bought it from an unauthorized dealer. dbuys.com

I did some research on this from my inside sources and apparently this problem is more common then you think.
The unconfirmed repair, let me repeat "unconfirmed" repair is a firmware upgrade.
Now I'm sure if you talk to pioneer or an authorized repair center they may be unwilling to indicate this to you. I would maybe call Pioneer and bark how you paid a lot of money for their product and you searched and found this is a common problem even if they wont admit it and its just barely out of warranty. Warranty shouldn't matter if you bought it from a non authorised dealer as long as it was new and you have a receipt.
Let me know how you make out and if you dont get anywhere I will check for someone who is Pioneer ASC on the private sites I'm on.

I have either had it power down and I could power it up OR it freezes and cannot be changed or turned off.
Several times removing power completely for 10 seconds or even a day made it work again.
Mine has been to a service center in Phoenix once and since it was "power" they re-soldered power supply area.
It happened again yesterday and today, Aug 13 and it is going in again.
It is only a 90 mile one way drive from a smaller town.
It is in warranty and I took an extended warranty when I bought it just over a year ago. It comes with a 2 year warr. and I took 3 on top of that for about $80. Glad I did.

Sorry to hear that others are having the same problem.

I have been in PM contact with Don on this issue and have had conversation with a Pioneer ASC tech and I gave Don the confirmed fix for this problem. I'm sure he will update us on the repair. I sometimes dont post the actual repair because I dont feel just anyone should be sticking their hands in things that dont know what they are doing. Anyone is always free to PM me for info......

Dropped the frozen receiver off on Aug. 13th in Phoenix. They called on Aug 21st and said it could be picked up.
Picked it up on the 24th and the only note on the paperwork was "Firmware Update". No numbers or whatever on the paperwork.
I will put it back in service today the 25th and see what happens.
The receiver gets a fair amount of use as it supplies Directv music most of the day to the house and movies or TV in the evening.
I have a S-Flex fan in the back keeping air moving. ( The fan has a fluid dynamic bearing ) for long life and moves a fair amount of air and is VERY quiet, even though the rcvr in not in a really tight space but "Electronics do not to get hot".
They had resoldered "faulty connections" the first time.

After new "firmware" it won't power on again.
Picked it up just before we left for a two week vacation.
It was plugged in and had worked.
Came back a week ago on Sunday, watched Directv, Bluray and XM radio.
Power it off Saturday night and it would not come on Sunday morning.
Back to Phoenix probably Thursday.
Irked in Prescott, 80 mile one way drive.

Bummer.........
I finally got the saw resonator part from Pioneer today (I had to escalate to 2 different magers, 3 times to get them to send it). The part is about the size of speck of dirt! Literally, it is the size of 2 pin heads, if that!
I am not so sure I am up to this type soldering.
Mac,
Are you good at very fine soldering?

After pestering the "repairer" and replying to Pioneer with my case number, they are going to replace it.
They said they could not get it to fail but usually after a week for me it would lock up or not power on.
Imagine that.
They said I would get a SC-25. They will ship to the repairer and then I can pick it up.
I have been nice in talking with everyone and "maybe that helped", but
been without sound this time since Sept. 23rd.
Hopefully bye for now.
