Hi, I purchased a Sony VPH-1041Q at an estate auction for the anvil case. I was going to sell it and keep the case, but one Halloween night we took it over the neighbor’s house and projected Saw II on the side of their house that has no windows and it looked pretty cool. So I let them use it there (did guitar hero and other movies) and one day the green tube imploded (they were adjusting the pots under the cover and who knows what happen). So back to my house it came. Not sure on what to do I started to surf the net getting prices and availability. It wasn’t until I found Curt that made me repair it. Downloading the service manual and finding the right part number, ordered it from him. Reading all his tips and tricks, installed the green CRT without a hitch. After spending seem like hours on adjustments and convergence, began to enjoy the picture and fine work I did. After about a half hour or so later I left the room to let out the dog heard like someone smacked a small hammer on the table. When I went in the room I noticed no change in the picture quality and watched for another 15 minuets or so. Just as I was going to turn the set off I noticed a blue halo beyond the edge of the picture and when I look into the lens seen the outer glass had cracked. After that long story I would like to know … What Did I Do Wrong! Did I have the brightness turned up to high? With the cover off was the fan under the green tube not circulating around the red and blue tube? It bummed me out. I don’t know whether to replace the blue tube or let super glue etch into the cracks because the glycol is still in there. And if I do replace it will it happen again. I’m scared.

The glycol absorbs moisture over time, through the silicone, which is porous to water vapor.

The pressure builds up, and the glass cracks.

You can replace the glass if you want. And you should bleed the other tubes (there will be a filler screw somewhere, maybe under a silicone blob).

But now you have whetted your appetite, maybe you should look around for something better!

Hey, sorry I didn't respond, working on answering emails while nursing a sore neck makes for slow email answering. Booking another chiro appointment today. It's literally... a pain in the neck. I'm bouncing between emails and the bench when the pain gets too much. Slow progress on bench work and emails. Sad

Mark more or less covered what happened, although I have seen that happen for (seemingly) no reason.

I've got a dead tube you have have for the price of shipping, then cut the front glass off it. Shoot me an email, I'll see if I missed anything when I get to your email within the next couple of days. Otherwise I ahve one brand new blue tube for the same price as the green if you want.

Thanks Mark. I should have kept the imploded green tube to experment on. Curt, what about the super glue thing. Do you think the glass is to weak now? I seen two small screews in the glass frame. What do they do? I read a thread on the forum about removing the glass. Maybe I'll tackle that spent tube of yours. You can E me with the shipping cost. One thing I did mention on the original question, I'f I had the tube(s) bluming, if that the word, that makes the picture wash out, like low contrast, will that cause them to over heat and crack?
