I run some 3 phase woodworking equipment at home and need a phase converter. My insurance agent found out that if I had a claim as a result of the converter I was better off with a home built converter that had a plug ( not hard wired into the home electrical system) than if I were to use a commercial unit that was not certified.
The commercial certified units were more than I was willing to spend, and the DIY rotary phase unit has been flawless and cost less to build than the shipping on a commercial unit. |
Can you explain to me how that "rotory" unit works? A friend of mine had what looked like a large motor fed with single phase. It would turn and somehow he was able to extract 3-phase. He used to repair hydrolic pumps and some of them were powered by 3-phase. Someone set it up for him and I never could grasp the concept.

2nd that... I have walked away from equipment I should have bought because I have not found an inexpensive solution to run three phase to my shop...
My county will actaully throw me in a meter... but I ain't going to raise those eyebrows.. bastards take me for enough as it is...

Oops sorry guys, I missed the new posts.
The first link above is a good description of the theory, the only thing I would recommend is to use a voltage sensing relay, these are common and can be picked up at any electrical or HVAC wholesaler.
The most common style of homebuilt (and a few commercial units!!) phase converter uses capacitors on the two live legs to create the third leg, it usually has a manual switch to run the start capacitors...this is usually not full voltage on the third leg and under load it becomes unstable and will drop enough to stall or damage the motor. By adding an additional idler motor to the circuit you can create a "flywheel" effect that can buffer the amount the voltage drops, and by adding a voltage sensing relay you can kick the start cap on and off as needed to supplement the run cap when the load starts to pull the voltage down.
The system I built has an old heavy iron 3HP motor as the idler (20$) a few caps, project box and relay ( 30$ish...) with a starter switch (DOL) that was a freebie from an industrial reno, but you could pick one up surplus/used for 20 bucks.
I run an old Wadkin Bursgreen 3HP 3PH like this javascript:%20n_window("show.php?pic=http://www.usedwoodworkingmachines.co.uk/products/images/listings/-1248449134-3.jpg","0","0");
as well as a 3HP 3PH General 350 tablesaw, and a 220 dust collector...
I have all my stationary tools on magnetic disconnect/ overload switches (DOL).
When I wired it all up I built the phase converter and tucked it against the wall with the relay/cap box wall mounted next to the DOL and the idler motor directly below. The DOL starter has a plug pigtail that is stuck in the 220 outlet I have wired right next to it. The 220 dust collector is also plugged into the same outlet and the whole works lives on a 40amp breaker on the main house panel.
If anyone is interested I can give you the specs/values for the components, they will easily run a 3 or 4 HP load.
I have tested this design by ripping into 3" red oak at an overfeed till the motor started to growl-the third leg voltage stayed rock solid- the relay would kick in and out invisibly in terms of power.
The obvious benefit is that you can pick up heavy reliable 3PH tools that other people walk right past, (and usually at a great price!!) but the real plus is being able to run your machines hard without worrying that the motor is about to smoke in the middle of a job. My Tablesaw came out of a High school wood shop and only needed a set of bearings and fence alignment. The bandsaw came out of the local college when they upgraded and had been babied its whole life...came with about 300$ worth of blades as well
The voltage sensing relay is the secret.
this is a great link:

This thread warmed the cockles of my heart. I had run ins with Gary few years ago. He was a major knob end then and still is. It is totally poetic justice that he is a gun totting, bible thumping redneck, with a 1st grade education (apologies to any 1t graders reading this). Of course he wants to be a police man, it's all penis envy.
I will email his myspace page to all law enforcements agencies I can find in the states. Hopefully it'll keep one more psychotic wanna be away from normal people.
What a dick!

Hey now, there is nothing wrong with owning guns or reading the Bible. Secondly, most of the "rednecks" here in the south these days are from Ohio, New Jersey or New York.

I apologize for bringing an old thread back from the dead but it appears that Gary Murrell may be parting out his Runco 1101 (aka Barco 1209s) on Ebay under the screen name aobr9008. The location of that seller is listed as East Point, KY and Google shows a Gary Murrell there. I was considering buying something until I remembered Gary was from KY. I have no proof it is Gary but if you do buy something just make sure you are covered with PayPal, your credit card, etc.

Of course, he would part the machine out.
Kal, notice his ebay account is just going on a year old? Gee, I wonder why that is?

He always offers free shipping...Wonder if that's because he never ships?
