Ok so I finally figured out how to reverse the image from floor mount to ceiling mount and have leveled off the projector to get a straight image. I am still have having trouble aligning and converging all the tubes but its coming along. I can't seem to save any of the adjustments I make though? do I have to create a new input? Also I dont have any sources hooked up to the projector yet should I do this even know Im in the initial stages?? would this be a reason its not saving also. One more thing I was screwing around on a couple of the already input " Info List" items and changed one from RGB to video. After that ithe PJ turned off and on again and then a message came up with " Fan not working ", I checked and all 3 fans were operating. Haven't seen it since.

The projector is at about 119" center of the G lense to screen/wall so I am thinking I should get about 92-98" screen???? does this sound right??

Any ways I will keep going, eventually I should get it......i hope.

TV/Projector: All of them!

Oops! Just realized that there's a part of the setup guide that's missing. I'll flesh it out with pictures the next time I set up an NEC XG, and will get Kal to add it to the document on the main site. That missing section is here:

Run a live signal into the set!

As with most data grade projectors, you need to feed a signal into the projector to get the internal test patterns to stabilize. While you can run any number of resolutions to the projector, my recommendation for the initial setup is to run something around 480p to 720p for the initial setup, you can then add additional memory locations and resolutions and tweak each of these memory locations. The important thing is to run a live signal into the set for the duration of the setup procedure. If you’re running a computer as the signal feed, make sure the computer does not go into ‘sleep’ mode, as the projector will glitch as the computer shuts down, and your work to that point will not be saved into memory. This article will assume that you know how to do a signal entry and allocate a memory location for your input signal.

Practice makes perfect

The biggest complaint that I get is that first time CRT owners get very frustrated with setting up a CRT projectors. Two recommendations:
1) Don’t spend more than 3 hours each session tweaking your projector
2) Do a full setup three times on a projector. Each time you should notice a significant improvement over the previous setup.

Password:

Depending on the exact XG set that you have, certain functions may not be accessible without inputting the master password. The master password is ‘3151’ or ‘13151 for the later NEC XG sets. Some commands may also be locked out if you are in the ‘user’ mode, or ‘ non password’ mode. To make sure that you can access all required functions of the XG set, enter the above passwords when asked for them. If you currently do not have a password entered into the set, do that, by going to the ‘password’ function of the XG. Enter some easy to remember password, such as ‘1234’. Exit the password mode, and press ‘yes’ when asked if you want to return to the user mode. Once you are back in user mode, press ‘adjust’ on the remote, and this time when asked for a password, enter ‘3151’; (or 13151). That will now unlock all required areas. Write the master password down somewhere so you don’t forget it!

THEN, read this:

So one more question- Should I go through and look at the boards and check all the wires and connections make sure everything is seated properly and no loose connections? Also do most of the boards just fit in like a socket style? Sorry to be so new at this.

Thanks

No, if the set is working, leave it alone. You can actually cause more damage trying to 'clean' the inside of the set. An air compressor is all you need to blow dust out of the set if it's a dirty chassis.

I have been tinkering with an NEC XG, so I can give you some hints on setup.

1. get a screen-up (or even use a white wall). make sure that the screen is flat and equidistant from CRT.
2. Make sure you read all the manuals on this site. The install guide will tell you what the distance should be for your screen size. If you follow the instructions, it will be much easier for you to get things up and running. BTW, you will read in Curt's doc that the raster positioning on NEC is more conservative, if you configure a bigger raster, you can go closer by 7%.
3. Don't bother with the mechanical setup first (you will find instructions for that too here).
make sure you have a signal coming in and you can see (even tho it maybe fuzzy) on the screen.
Zero out all the settings. You do this by going into each setting (keystone for example) and press the NML key.
4. get the focus pattern up and focus the lens using the 2 screws on each lens. Do the astig setup. if you cant get this right, it means that you will have to adjust the astig magnets thru a mechanical setup.
5. Get the cross hair pattern up and align the lenses on the horizontal plane till the cross hairs match. if you are using the 100 or the 120 diagonal setting, you Don't have to do this. use the static setting instead. if your projector was setup right the green tube should be dead center with the center of the screen.

6. Make sure the cross hair pattern is up. At this point, the 3 RGB lines should intersect in the middle and be white. They may be out of alignment else where.

7. Start off with aligning the green tube with the cross test pattern. Having strings or some kind of lines on the screen helps.
8. Once you are done, do the red and blue.

9. if you cant get things setup exactly right, you can cheat by using the point convergence. But its just a temporary solution- you can lose convergence later and also its more stressful on the machine.

Thats more or less a very basic setup. There are a lot more resources here that you can go thru and make it look even better. If you have any questions, I can try helping.

Actually, I think how you null the settings is to push CNTL plus NML at the same time, then choose Cancel and hit Enter. If you just hit the NML button, you'll only take the setting to whatever the previous setup SET as "normal" which could be anything. By using the control + normal keys, then choosing cancel, you're dumping all settings to null*(which, I think is zero on an NEC, it is 49 on a Barco and 128, I think, on a Sony...).

PASSWORD for a PG series is 2580. I don't know if they did this on purpose but that happens to be the keys in the center from top to bottom of number keys on the remote. For the XG's they changed to '3151' for some reason. Possibly that's the phone extention of the assistant to the regional manager at NEC Smile .
