Got a customer that I sold a low hour Ultra to in Edmonton, about 2 years ago. He emailed last week, saying that he's getting an H fail with no picture after about 15 minutes.

I sent him a tested and working H deflection board, no dice. Same thing. He added tonight that the set clicks:

Got the board yesterday just put the board in tonight ran a blue ray movie after about 15 min did the same thing H-fail picture goes black you can hear the projector making sounds click click click What now?.Thanks

The clicking is usually an overload somewhere in the set, so I'm having him pull out the focus board to see if it thermally shuts down after 15 minutes. Seems like the fans under the HDM are working.

My next guess would be the power supply? Maybe one of the fans on it seized?

Where is the clicking coming from?

If its coming from the new HDM couldn't it be trying to do a BW switch and the signal being sent for it from the CLM is not 100% right?

Very odd...

Though I know little about PJs still, I have seen (heard) similar things from failing caps. If it is a loud clicking, I'd suspect some component that used large to mid-sized caps (power supply? something in the CRT gun driving stages? dunno enough about the internal workings of the PJs to make a guess where). Though I have seen some pretty small ones that end up being pretty loud when they discharge/leak someplace inside of them where they shouldn't be.

I'm sending him a power supply and a CLM. One of those should do it, if not, I take a trip to Edmonton I think.

Sounds like a plan, I think either of those two should solve it if not a HDM or LVPS would be next on the list.
