|
|
Hi Everybody,
I've finally made the upgrade to a Marquee 8500. I've actually had the thing for over a year but just haven't had the time to tinker with it. This is my third Electrohome, the others being a 3100 and 4100.
17000 hrs on the tubes. Not the greatest but the price was right. No much visible wear either.
I've gone through the setups a few times now, (real setups, i.e. Bill Blue Magnetics and Guy Kuo focus) and it it just seems to me that the output from my blue tube is terrible. I could barely setup the astig and mechanical focus due to the lack of output.
The next part I had to do with out the use of a color meter. This is on my toy list but it's going to have to wait until I'm in my new home in a few months.
I threw up a white test field and found it to be yellow and pushing towards the red side a tad. No meter needed...it's was more that obvious. I adjusted my G2's and moved onto the drives. Unfortunately to get anything near white I had to crank up the blue drive almost to 100!
Is this blue tube shot or could there be another problem elsewhere in the chassis causing the low output?

I'll check the filament voltage on Saturday and post my results.
Thanks!

Athanasios,
I finally got around to checking the P14 filament voltage this morning and it's a little high at 6.84 VDC between pins 1 and 2 on the connector.
Looks like I have a blue tube with a cooked heater due to the high voltage in the circuit. The green and red are still operating withing normal limits but I'll have to take the unit out of service until I correct the issue with the LVPS and get a replacement blue tube.
Thanks for all your help!!!
John

Athanasios
Thanks for the recommendation on the blue and red tubes. I purchased them and they arrived today. I'm now working on obtaining the parts for the LVPS repair. I'll post my results when the repairs are completed.
Thanks,
John

......it's always something.....
Turns out the red and blue tubes I purchased from Niktec on eBay were shot. Just my luck. They looked great from a physical perspective but electrically were dead. Very low output from the red and just about nothing from the blue, I had to look directly in the lens to see anything with the blue. Just to make sure didn't make any mistakes I tested the old tubes which worked as well as they did before I pulled them from the set.
On the flip side the green VDC the PJ came with looks great, especially with the mods. I did manage to mod the LVPS, HVPS and VNB's while I had the PJ apart. I'm going to go ahead and throw the old tubes back in the PJ until I have money for a set of VDC rebuilds. At that point I may mod the rest of the PJ.
Thanks for you help. It's nice to know there are always people out there willing to share their knowledge.
Thanks,
John

I just sent an email to Niktec. Hopefully they will be able to help me out.

If they want to adhere to the conditions of their own auction listing, they have an obligation to send you replacements that are ACTUALLY excellent used condition, cause obviously, dead tubes are not that...

I went back and checked the terms of the auction. They offer the following terms at the end of the auction which do seem to contradict the conditions stated for the particular items in the auction:
# Please read the description carefully as we do not grant any refunds or returns for items bought by mistake. (no mistake here...I really need the blue tube.)
# If there are any problems with an order, contact us immediately. Contact must be made within 7 days after receipt of goods. After 7 days we will not accept any returns or provide any refund. (Crap! Way beyond 7 days now! Did not have the time to do the swap within 7 days.)
# All products are sold AS IS no warranty. Read the description make sure you understand what you are bidding on before you bid. (seriously??? Then what's the point in advertising an item as MINT and in WORKING CONDITION?)
I'm not going to jump to any conclusions until I receive a response. All I'm worried about is the blue tube. I really don't care about the red. Stay tuned ............

So far so good. I've be trading emails with Niktec and they are going to send me another set of 180DMB22 Red and Blue. The only drawback is that the replacement set will not have the yokes or astig magnets. Once the new tubes arrive I may have to have to chime in on how to go about setting the the yokes properly. I don't think it should be too bad though. I can't wait to get a good blue in the projector.....i'm really starting to think that white is actually yellow.

Wow! You were right about Niktec! I must admit I was getting a little nervous about the transaction for a minute there. So far they have come through for me.
One thing I am concerned with is the new tube. They are sending me a MEC 180DVB22 and NOT a Panasonic 180DMB22. Is this going to be a problem? Are they interchangeable?
I am still curious about what the hell might have gone wrong with the first set of tubes. I checked all the pins and the deflection coil wiring but I can't find anything amiss. There wasn't anything loose in the tube either. I suspect the shipping container was tossed around a bit but there's no indication of that either. Oh well....on to the next set of tubes.
The information at etechvideo looks great and will definitely be of great assistance.

The first set of tubes probably had fried heaters just like your blue. I've seen (and thrown away) countless MINTY white phosphor tubes that are just dead, dead, dead

Let me get this straight? Is the DVB tube the same as a LUG? What is LUG? Sorry but I'm a little confused on this. This is my first adventure in "tube land".
I have no problem with the modifications of the VNBs but I do have a problem with the color tracking being off after the mods when the contrast is adjusted. Is this something I should be concerned with since I will have a red and blue DVB and a green DMB?
Thanks,
John

it must stay there that is for the LUG tubes and I dont thing it will affect this tube, anyone else on this?
Athanasios | I really don't know. normally with DMB's pins 6 and 7 are grounded to each other right. So if you remove pin 6 but leave R37 and R38 then pin 7 is still left floating no?
