My impression is that SVS makes some killer subs, never heard them though. I think that they are a bit on the high side as far as bang for buck goes.
Check out Elemental Designs. www.edesignaudio.com
I haven't seen a direct comparison between the a3-300 and the 12" NSD but I would think they are pretty close....but eD includes shipping in their price.

Right on, Greg!
Athanasios, I can tell you the SVS subs in Cliffy's HT are frickin' unbelievable. I mean, they made so damn much bass that the kitchen floor above the theater was SHAKING. I don't mean vibrating... I actually mean shaking. Of course, he's probably running in the neighborhood of $3000 worth of Ultras. I have no idea how the NSD compares.
I can also vouch for the eD products - good, solid stuff. The eD guys brought an A2-300 to my meet, and it literally blew away my TWO old M&K V-75 Mk II 12" subs. It didn't have a ton of headroom, and did clip at one point, although we'd done no calibration and I was pushing the system HARD. We had Casino Royale at ~105dB, and for the most part, that little $350 A2-300 was keeping up with the rest of my system. VERY impressive for a $350 sub. The A3-300 with the bigger amp would probably be just right for my system. You could get two of them shipped for $1000 on the nose.
On paper, they look damn close... They both have pretty close to the same power (325 vs 300), they're both 12" drivers with comparable construction. The eD is a little heavier, while the SVS is a little bigger. They both have usable extension to 18hz. The only major difference on paper is that the two eD's would be a cool grand even - shipped - while the SVS pair would run $1140 plus shipping, which will be what, at LEAST another $100 or so, I'd imagine.

I can't recommend a 10" sub for a theater.
Living room maybe....otherwise I would call you a pansy and tell you to step up for some real bass.

I wouldn't get a 10", either. So, get one 12" now, and another later!
