Greg, if you want to start with DIY speakers, build a kit.
A 3 (or 4?) way speaker is extraordinarily difficult. I've been building speakers for almost 20 years and a 3 way scares me. I have a measuring and simulation system as well as access to a professional tablesaw and a mill. I've designed a number of speakers for local manufacturers (yes, for sale).
Crossovers are difficult, even in a 2 way.
Flog these and build a kit to start with, then do some reading, then try a 2 way.

At this point in my HT and audio hobby career...I am not really interested in designing crossovers, etc.
I am willing to build a pre-designed kit. I know 3-ways are hairy...I suppose I could block off some of the openings and just get a woofer and tweeter and build a simple 2 way arrangement. I will check the box volume.
I have already built these for my HT and they are pretty damn awesome sounding if I do say so myself!

I hate it when people post DIY stuff. Makes me completely aware how poor I am at woodwork, and can't hammer a nail in straight.
Looks awesome!

Looks awesome! | That is why nailers exist. And if you can't nail the lady then that is what your friends are for.

Thanks. It is amazing what 640x480 makes your handy work look like.
I just hope these can hold me over for awhile because I am itching already to build this!
Anyway...back to the topic at hand.
Mark - With all of your experience...let's see if you can make the most of this design challenge.
$60 per speaker...existing cabinet. And....GO!
