Read this today:

Quote:
No, your calendar is correct. While the deal reminds us of a certain Friday in November of which the color black is usually associated with, this deal is in celebration of Father's Day. Beginning this Sunday, June 14th, Walmart will offer the Magnavox NB500MGX Blu-ray Disc player for an astonishingly low $128.

And to help dad kick off his high definition collection, Walmart will offer two Paramount Blu-ray 2 for $20 packs. One pack will consist of 'Shooter' and 'The Italian Job' while the other will feature 'Face Off' and 'Next'.

The sale ends July 20th, or while supplies last, so make sure you show up at your local Walmart early to get in on these deals.

So while this bargain basement player is not likely one we'd want to use in our HTs, it's still all good news to the rise/adoption of Blu-ray to the masses. More people buying Blu-ray is a good thing for us videophiles.

Wow, that's cheap. I'm sure it's a POS, but $128?!?! Wow.

As for the movies, the Shooter/Italian Job pack would be cool for $20 - those are both good flicks. The other one? Next was pretty good, but Face Off? Oh, MAN that movie was terrible. My wife and I laughed about it for months after we saw it...

Exactly. As much as it's bad for the environment and we shouldn't be doing it... they're getting into the disposable price range.

I imagine a few more years from now you'll set $39.99 Blu-ray players just like we see DVD players today at that price.

I bought a Memorex blu ray last Black Friday sale and so far it's worked flawlessly and it has 5.1 analog outputs...

Ah, super cheap players at WalMart: good for HD adoption, bad for everything else!

No Firmware updates have been issued for the Memorex since 12/24/08. That doesn't sound very promising.

Does it play newer disks OK Tom?

My LG has not had a firmware update since June 08 and it never fails to play discs.

Good for all of us... the more super cheap ones sold, the cheaper some of the expensive components will become thus eventually lowering the prices of the decent to high end models.

Now, lets see which wins out for me... waiting for the price drops, or really wanting one.... Wink
