After some cogitation I've decided to get a better LCD rather than an FW900. First, business is booming, so I've got some money to spend on infrastructure, and second, I don't want to risk a bum monitor / dead-in-six-months monitor.

I'm ready to spend somewhere around $1k. I want something *GOOD*.

There are a few 30"ers out there that are starting to hit the 1k price point, and those are options. Another option is to get a good 24"er and calibration hardware - while I don't really do hardcore prepress stuff, I *do* do images that end up in print on a fairly regular basis (eg, promo shots of my hardware that show up in magazines). So good color is a Good Thing.

Real estate is good, but since I already use about five monitors on various computers, wrapped around me in an arc, the difference between a 24" and 30" display isn't really a deciding factor. A 30" panel sure would be COOL though... Thumbs Up

Any advice?

You could have come inside when you were here and taken a look at the Samsung 305 T that I'm using. One of my customers gave it to me. I know nothing about it's abilities but it sure looks good to me.

If the 30 inchers are about $1K then I would suggest you look at the 1080P 42-50" plasmas in addition to the LCDs in the CEA world.

I considered that, but I already have a Desk Full Of Stuff:

...there's a 24"er in there now, so you can imagine trying to find a way to shoehorn a 42" monitor in there. Second, the huge field of view would be cool but wouldn't give me any more *real* data than I have now - in fact, a little less, since a TV panel would be 1920x1080 rather than 1200. So the apparent resolution would be a lot less. And most plasma / LCD TVs seem to have pixel structures that are fairly obnoxious, and are meant to be viewed from a distance where you don't see individual pixels. For use as a monitor, you obviously want to see individual pixels clearly, so that's a big negative.

Right now I'm leaning toward the HP LP3065 - it's roughly in budget range, and seems significantly better than the Dell 3007WFP (which is in budget) and possibly better than the 3008 (which is definitely not).

I've got to check out the Samsung though. As far as I'm aware, it's only Apple, Dell, HP, and Samsung in the 30" business (ok, I saw some specific-to-pro stuff but that was 5 grand...). Am I wrong?
