Whoa. What speakers are those Kim? They look like older Martin Logan CLS models (but not quite).

Those are self built "full range" (for an electrostat that is) electrostatic speakers. These are 1m wide and 2m high (3'3" by 6'6").

I actually first built these in the late 80's with obviously the Martin-Logans as example in mind. Just recently I took them completely apart, had the stators sand-blasted and powder coated and I am now putting them back together. I still have a few tweaks to make, but so far it is looking good.

Kim what kind of heat sinks are you using on the 60 watt class A amps ?

Also are they Mosfet amps ?

Tom,

Good find, I indeed resell the Solo amplifier from Anton Montagne which is an old friend from The Netherlands. The heatsink is about 5"x6" and it does have MosFet outputs.

The reason I asked about the heat sinks is I have a Pass Labs Aleph five that is a two channel class A 60 WPC amp and it runs VERY hot !

Tom,

The Solo does not run full class A, it is a dynamic class A. In a normal class A the full bias current for maximum output power is always present. In a class AB there is much less bias current but at a signal excursion one way the bias current in the other transistors of the push-pull stage actually goes to zero. The dynamic class A of the Solo keeps the minimum bias current in each PMOS/NMOS push-pull pair constant, thereby having the power dissipation advantage of a class AB but the distortion advantage of a class A.

So it is now 2010 and I will be at the Lone Star Audio Fest again. It happens this weekend Saturday May 15th again at the Embassy Suites Park Central in Dallas. I will bring a new set of electrostatic speakers with me of a bit more reasonable size, they will only be 2' wide and 5' high. I will try to make pictures tonight.

I will be driving these new puppies with a new 5 channel digital amplifier.

Kim

Kim,

Any reason you chose not to include balanced inputs ?

Tom,

No particular reason, I can still do it. It is designed for home theater and balanced outputs are pretty rare on most consumer electronics.
