I think the NEC's need the setup remote in order to do anything with them.

Careful reading is something that will stand you in good stead when using a crt projector.
What you were told was: you need the NEC remote, specifically the service remote to do anything.
It was also suggested to you that if you did not have the NEC remote, a readily available, and often cheaper substitute, is a Pronto universal learning remote because there are existing .ccf files for the Pronto which give you the same functionality as the original NEC service remote.
You were not told you *had* to use a Pronto, ONLY that it was a readily available substitute IF you could not FIND an exact NEC service remote for a reasonable price.
The remotes which jkruger posted links to do not show the remote you need, they will only work with older NEC projectors.

Oh I know, but I NEED a Pronto remote! One remote to control everything? How can that not be a need!

No no, find the NEC remote. They come up on Ebay "fairly" frequently (as in every few months). PM some guys like Tinman (sorry to point fingers dude) who might have a few NEC's and might be willing to part with a remote. No, I'm not saying he does have a spare, just that he might. He's the only guy I know in the USA with more than a few NEC's (unless he cleared them out).
The Pronto is a "I can't find a remote and NEED a remote, remote". ONLY, if you fail to get the NEC remote should you even look at the Pronto. The NEC is hard enough to learn without having to figure out a remote Pretending to be the real thing. Seriously, find the NEC remote. I CAN'T offer you mine as I only have one, but some guys here must have a few. The PG series is getting too old to hoard 5 remotes.
C-mon guys, someone here has to have a "few" spares.

When you stop by for the screen you can see how I hung my 1209s with unistrut from the rafters. If you can do a ceiling mount in your place it usually works better than a shelf. You might want to do your first few setups with it on a table so it's easier to work on.

Ya I already measured out the rough area where it will go on a table. Seems as though I will be building the table myself, which is cool. Living in an apartment with that fake asbestoses ceiling doesn't really allow me to mount a projector on the ceiling. After measuring it all out it seems my room is too long to put it in the back (I guess for a 72" screen it NEEDS to be roughly 107" away from the screen.

I just measured this one and it is 70" wide, wall or ceiling mountable. I'm home now so anytime you want to come by is okay.

John's setup was way cool! I can't believe just how BIG that 9" thing is!!! I still have a hard enough time with how big the 6pg is! Also amazing picture even in broad daylight. Needless to say I got some good pointers on how to set mine up and am working on it as we speak. I should have everything positioned by tonight, though I will have to be patient and wait for the remote to get it running.
Oh, and your girlfriend has a really cool car! I love those old 3 series; almost bought one a few times! Thanks a million man! Pictures will be up soon hopefully!

So here are the promised pictures! Excuse the mess...I had to rearrange the room so I just tossed everything aside for now...My two brothers and me make for a crowded room!
Now obviously I have a long way to go in terms of calibrating/adjusting it. I do realize that it is much bigger/taller than the screen, which is fine. I got it clear enough to wear I can read the menu text (which is all upside-down atm) and I can tell where the wear is on the screen. Honestly, while the image goes way past the screen, the actual viewable point (within the wear of the tubes) is JUST outside the screen by a matter of a few inches. Combine that with putting some wood/books under the back means it should fit the screen just perfectly!

Nice little setup, you'll need to bring either the projector closer to the screen or the screen closer to the projector.
