I guess the new 360 takes away this little feature, right?? Does it add anything?

Personally, I'm thinking about the new WD media streamer. If I can get it for $100, I would....I have all my movies on an external HD, and I can plug that right into the WD. And it plays mkv's with no problems too!

If you mean a WDTV, no it doesn't play all mkv files without problems, I tried it, with latest firmware.

It will not play a movie with 7.1 channel FLAC.

It stutters on 24bit FLAC.

I'm thinking of getting one to replace the PS3. Looking forward to hearing your report when you receive it. I'm most interested in how it performs wrt low level black detail.

I'll be checking it against my PS3. From reports by others there is a big difference between these 2 players.

When the players are used as what? Scalers? Simply 1080/24 digital transports? Something else. There are so many different ways to use many players that it's nearly impossible to give a definite comparison. You have to do it in pieces and compare the parts (so to speak).

I still have hard time understanding how one player can look or sound any better than another if they're only used as a digital transport without any image processing, scaling, noise reduction, etc. This is all made harder given that all players (and the PS3) are firmware upgradeable so the quality can/will change over time.

Hi Kal,

Well there seems to be a large number of people (and getting larger) claiming that the Oppo is better than the PS3. Saying the PS3 is alot softer for BR, now what format they're using I don't know, also softer for DVD upscaling. As for the audio I don't pay as much attention to that as the video quality comments. These comments are coming from people who have small screens(TVs) to people with large screens and expensive PJs. One of the guys has that Lumis or Lumix PJ worth 40k or something like that, he has both as well as the Pioneer 09 and 51 I think it was, his was the first comment I read saying the PS3 was way softer than the Oppo or the 09.

I guess I'll find out for myself when I get it then I won't have to concern myself with what others say in their comparison between the 2, if I see an improvement then great if not well then I decide which one to keep. I don't really care much about DVD upscaling as I'm already spoiled with BR.

I don't doubt that there are diffrences, I would just want to know exactly how people are using both. I hate blanket statements. If indeed in my setup (1080i/60 video output of Blu-ray only content via HDMI) the difference would be noticeable, I'd be happy to pick up an Oppo too.

I personally use a Samsung 1500, and just installed a 1590 w/Fury and gammaX in a house in Whistler. I gotta say, Dark Knight looked freaking awesome on the retubed 1209s that I installed.

I don't have the time to a/b hardware very often, so posts like this are appreciated.

All I have to say is that Sammy 1590 weighs about as much as a no name brand POS regular DVD player.. and is about the same size. Go figure, that's about 1/3 the size of Gen 1, not 3 years ago..

Hi Kal,

Well after I've had a chance to live with it for awhile I'll post what I think about it compared to the PS3. I have a number of the "best" rated video quality BR discs to watch as well as the DVE BR test disc and the one Oppo sends with the unit.

Should I use % points to describe better or worse? Just kidding!

I would just hope Oppo is fast on their firmware upgrades. Is Sony ever going to finish Blu-ray? This constant need for updated firmware to play the newer movie is crazy and IMO puts Sony at an unfair advantage.

FYI I would give people a heads up on not buying an Oppo from Gary M. These posts in his public profile on AVS are NOT impressive.

Hi Mike,

I'm not sure what your point is with the Gary posts, is it to say that oppo isn't a good company to deal with? I've dealt with them in the past and had no problems.

I think Gary is an Oppo dealer....And it appeared he was giving this guy in the link a run around. I see he's back here in the HD-Fury forum so perhaps Curt and him patched things up.

Are the players even available yet, I couldn't see on the Oppo site where you could order one?

I doubt Gary is an Oppo dealer as I don't think Oppo has any dealers as you buy direct form them. Yes they are for sale, they have already shipped mine yesterday.

Well I got my Oppo BR last night and had a chance to watch a few clips from various BR discs comparing them to the PS3. Overall I would say the Oppo is a step or 2 above the PS3. The PS3 just seemed on the soft side and the colours seemed muted compared to the Oppo. Also the Oppo seemed to have more depth to it. That's not to say that the PS3 is bad but it just seemed when going from the Oppo to the PS3 it was like hmmm where did the punch go and then going back to the Oppo was like --Ahhh that's better. I never tryed DVD but I will do that another day.
Of course not a great in depth review but my overall take on the Oppo is I'll be keeping it and selling my PS3 but it does give the PQ that extra kick in the right direction. All the oppo settings were at neutral and I used the 1080p/60 YCpCr444 deep colour settings for the output, as well the PS3 was set for 1080p/60.

The Oppo BDP-83 Blu-ray player's getting some really good reviews. I posted details about it here including links to purchase to help support the forum: https://www.curtpalme.com/forum_archived/viewtopic.php@t=16934.html
