Hi all
I got hold of a pristine BG800 a while back, have started the mod process by recapping, shielding and putting pure copper double shielded cable (lanmark6 with spine - just fits in stock clips) where the cheap steel wires go. No wonder the controller is packed with coils to cut the HF noise from the other components. Im no electronic expert so transistors leave me wondering. The tubes are like new, got tinted C elements in it. Alu HD-8 lens housings are coming soon, any other tweak to avoid convergence drift over the long run after its broken in ?
Kal: You seem to know a thing or two after reading about your old 800. This is like barely broken in compared to the runtime yours had tho 
Also looking at it from an electromagnetic point of view woudlnt it make sence to shield the HV leads abit ? (not earth shield that is) All tips are welcome, since im going to spend loads and loads of time on this.

Why not upgrade to better lenses than the HD8's?

What you need to look at though is the age of the set. Whether new in the box or not, components will now fail simply due to age. I always give electronics 20-25 years of run time. I'd do the solder joints in the SMPS, the FETs on the video boards, but that's about it. RUn the heck out of it, enjoy it, but expect to dump it in 3ish years.
Funny, I just am emailing with a tech at a planetarium that says they have a BG808 that has failed every 6 hours since she's been involved with the unit. I emailed back that the 808 series are more or less tanks, but it seems she has a lemon.
I wouldn't put too much time or effort into that BG800, although I know I did get a few in with <1000 hours on them, and they looked damn good compared to worn ones I'd had in.

Lens options wich you think would be much better than the HD-8 ? If i need to machine brackets myself thats no issue.
3 years scrap ? If you saw how mint this thing looks inside you would think it was stored in vacuum. I was like "wtf" when i saw how the solderside looks on the 800/1s on the layout pages on the site.

Recapping the whole thing made mine a lot stabler in terms of convergence. Before it would constantly drift.
Change the bipolar caps on the R/G/B lines - that made a big difference for me but then, I did have over 23,000 hours on it. 
The machine is limited in what you can perform however - don't spend too much on it.

Since you have the colored glycol go for a set of HD144 or HD145's I belive Curt has some.
