Ok next unplug focusyoke connectors from FCM and test is there still same effect to focus if you ramp contrast up/down.
I want just make sure where that focus "movement" is happening (FCM, HV-section or something ) |
Yes, I unplugged focus connectors, moved contrast UP/DOWN and the focus changes slightly - i assume this is normal.
I also tested the +-85 VDC rails and they read correct values with a multimeter (man that is difficult with a ceiling mounted projector).
I will do the rear panel today...

Tim, I have not seen traces of glycol in the machine (we had a glycol leak when Gino and I moved the PJ but it was ceiling mounted and it did not affect the electronics). The interior of the machine looks very clean to me... no evident traces of damage... anyway.

Small update: problem remains. I've swapped deflection cables for R and G and then the width is normal (i.e. not severely shrunk as before) but it doesn't make any sense.
I've also disconnected the convergence and stig boards to run the PJs without them - they do not seem to affect anything.
Any ideas? I'm at a loss and I think it could be either the G tube (which has ceased to focus on the sides) or I have no idea...
Why would be width be OK when having the deflection yokes for R and G swapped out?

Ok, so it still does not focus with cables swaped but it will have the correct width? Swap out the
focus cables also to the green with one from the red. i have a feeling your green Tube may have arced and blown out all the green sections connected to it.

Nashou, aren't you in Greece. Where there are nude beaches? Put down the lap top go there and look at the gorgeous girls sunbathing.

Do I have to do this with the deflection yokes also swapped out?

Sounds odd?? Check Diodes D17,D26 and D45 at HDM. Simply take your multimeter and put it in diode range and measure those diodes (meter should read about 0.6v) and to another direction (red testlead to lineside of diode) should read infinite.

I wonder if the width coils on the HDM are faulty? I have never seen them go bad but it is strange that swaping the R and G HDM cables allows the width to go normal. I still think he should swap out the green tube all together. Andre, you do have an old spare tube right? If you could some how just test the spare tube without puting it into the PJ, maybe put it on a ladder close enough to all the cables for the G tube in the PJ you could see if that tube has the correct width
and focus. Even another color tube would be fine since you just want to test the electronics and the tube itself. that would rule out the tube if the test tube
shows the same problem.
But reading back you say it is on all tubes but swaping makes all tube show equal width but no focus...right? Hmmm this is very odd... I think some how glycol, even though it was ceiling mounted may have done something either on the mother board or the back plane. remember that the glycol befoe the leak amy have been under some pressure and squirted out with some force to an area you could not see it. like the connector to the HVPS or the LVPS. maybe then it dripped down onto the connectors in other places. I hate to say this but a complete dropping of your PJ and and tear down might be needed if nothing else works since you switched every board in the set beside the mother and backplane boards.

Oh man. I think I got this one figured out.... check the yoke connectors for burn or scaring.
I had this same problem. One of the yoke connectors was oxidized and it caused it to heat up and scar.
I've also had a very similar problem and it was a defective yoke. They do go bad..

Maybe silly, but when you connected the red focus to the green tube you DID remember to use the RED focus controls for the green when you tried to focus it... right?

Thanks all. I am going to go with MPs suggestion first (it's the easiest!) and if not try Athanasios' one of putting a tube in a ladder and test.
1031 & Athanasios: I've also tested with another (spare) Ultra HDM with same results, so I do not think it is an HDM issue.
CIR-Engineering: Yes, when I've swapped the focus yokes, I accounted for the change when testing the focus controls.
MP: are the yoke problems visually easy to spot? I'll take a few pics just in case.

Mike - I changed the deflection yoke and it worked!
I inspected the failed yoke and it has a segment of the coil wires burnt (it does smell like burnt too)... go figure.
Thanks all for the suggestions.

I have actually never seen a bad deflection coil yet but it only takes one very small scratch on the winding to start a downward spiral where the varnish on the wires starts to cook off. I'm glad you got it straightened out
