Find an orphanage in need of entertainment and set it up for them. Hell you might even get a tax write off.

Give to those that truly have nothing or know one...

TV/Projector: All of them!

Just saw this while searching for another post.

I've got no problems with this. He's not making any money off it, gave me a free plug about a projector that was solid since I've sold it, and I made money off it originally.

Funny, some of you know that my fiance is doing the dog rescue thing as per the link below. She advertises dogs on Craigslist pet section here locally, and you should see the people bitching about her, and spreading lies, as her rescue has really taken off, both with shelters selling her dogs for cheap, and people that want dogs from her. Some other people (mostly women I think) apparently are a bit jealous on Craigslist and bash her like crazy. Then there are others that come to her defense, it's quite entertaining if you go read the Vancouver CL in the pets section. Do a search on 'cold noses' or 'CNWB' and see the drama unfold if you're bored.

That's what the start of this thread reminded me of Wink

Well I absolutely apologise if I have broken any rules and I definitely do not wish to do curt any harm whatsoever - I am horrified at the prospect ! In that case I'll withdraw the offer and will skip the unit. Apologies for breaking the rules Embarassed

Fantastic result! A win win for everybody - Curt, who still doesn't sell a projector to a guy in Europe who never would have bought one anyway; the guy who might have gotten it, who can't afford a PJ but would have loved one; Markyb, who gets to expend the time (and possibly money) to throw out a perfectly good projector; and the environment, which gets to suck up another 150lbs of pointless waste!

Rolling Eyes

Agreed, throwing it out would be a waste.

In the interests of keeping to my original intention of getting someone new into the hobby if poss would you be prepared to be a gentleman and move aside for them ( since I contacted you this morning ) ???? If not then ok since I said you could take it already.. let me know. tks

So, here is how the story continues...

A friend of mine (Bene) was looking for a CRT projector for some time now and I was helping him in the search.
We were looking at different options, but preferred a NEC machine, as I also have one of those and am familiar with the setup.
These are pretty hard to find in germany and we didn't have any luck at first.
That is, until I saw this thread and realized that the PG was located in germany. Well, I asked Bene if maybe he would
be interested in a free machine. Guess what, he said yes!
Thus I wrote to Mark and he answered that Kai already expressed interest in the PJ, but that he liked the idea of bringing someone
new into the hobby. As can be seen some posts ago, Kai was kind enough to step aside. Thanks again, Kai! Smile

We arranged the pickup for some weeks later, as it is quite a ride from Goettingen to Trier (400 km one way...).
In the meantime, Mark wanted to test the PG a last time before he gave it away. It had been in storage for some months,
which apparently lead to a pressure buildup in the tubes. The result was, that the red tube cracked after a short
time of use Sad Mark wrote this to us, but we decided we will have a go anyway and try to repair the tube. Wouldn't be much
fun, if you can just plug it in and all works, wouldn't it Wink

On the 6th of june we made the trip. Everything worked fine, we arrived in Trier at 2pm, had a nice hour with Mark and loaded
everything in the trunk. When we arrived back home we immediately had a look at the lenses. This is what greeted us:

Nicely cracked tube face! The following day we removed all three tubes. The green and blue one were 'bled' (opening the
screws over the glycol tank and extracting some glycol), so that those wont crack too.
From the red tube we extracted all glycol with a syringe and bathed the tube face for two days in 'silicone remover' from the hardware store.
After that we were able to remove the broken glass from the tube. As a replacement we used a panel of 4 mm polycarbonate,
which was cut at a local workshop.

We applied black silicone around the tube face and put some folded pieces of paper in it as spacers.
This is what the siliconed tube looked like:

We then put the polycarbonate on it (with light pressure) and let the silicone dry for three days. Then we filled the
glycol back again. Using a syringe was maybe not the best idea, as it produced a lot of bubbles inside the glycol chamber,
that were very hard to get rid of (see the picture).

With a thin wire, inserted through the glycol-hole we were able to clean nearly all of the bubble off, so that we could
reseal the glycol chamber and put all tubes back in.

And finally, the white-knuckles-moment came: Switching it on for the first time after all these operations. We didn't know
what to expect...
Tada! Everything worked fine:

We put the lenses back on and did a first rough convergence. Looking good! We will need to redo the Astig, but thats for later...

Bene is absolutely thrilled by the picture of his new toy. He has already sewed some curtain for his soon-to-be cinema.
The rest will grow over time... Smile

All I can say is thank you, Mark! This was really a cool move by you! Good luck back in britain!

Daniel.

For what it's worth, it looks like the lens might have impacted the tube face in transit. Is that possible? Usually pressure buildup in the tubes will result in one big crack, not a bunch of small ones. I could be wrong though.

One of the green tubes on my shelf had the same kind of crack Smile
It's still sitting here minus the front glass now. Too lazy to fix it.

I don't think so, as it happend while it was still sitting at Mark's place. He said he had it running for a few hours, when suddenly the red became blurry. I guess the added pressure by heat expansion triggered the crack.
