Couldn't you just buy a cheap learning remote and send it to one of the other Ampro guys to program for you? Then it would be the remote you could use to teach others.

Thanks for all the responses, I really appreciate it. I think after reading all this I am going to try a harmony. While I was thinking of getting the 880 I have gone over some of the reviews online and found a few problems with it and think i will get a harmony 720, seems they fixed some of the issues with that one like the charging station and I like the design better and I think its the only other harmony with the tilt feature which I really like the idea of. Also for only 50 bucks I think ill pick up a MX-500 just to play with, sounds like a cool remote, but would probably still have wife problems if she had to go to different component pages, which is the main problem she has with the sony remote. Its funny my wife is an engineer and can design complicated drainage systems for huge development projects, but just cant understand the remote, must be genetic or something. Also you guys mentioned that the main reasons for getting a computer programable remote is for lost remotes and ease of programming. I think the lost remote idea is true and one of the reasons I want one(not going to pay the $200 or so for a D50 remote that they selling for), but I wouldn't say they are easy, at least the harmony I tried the interface kind of sucked, but if you put in a lot of time you can get it right. Another function of these remotes that I find to be a major selling point is the ability to add discrete codes to it. I have almost all of my original remotes, but there are several functions and shortcuts that are not on those, that are in the harmony data base. Such as my normal television which has 6 different inputs(which I only use 2 of, input 2 and 5) and the only way to change between them is to press the input command then scroll through each one in order, then press a button to select it, where the harmony database has a direct shortcut command to input 2 and 5. My centerstage scaler and tv are also limited in shortcuts for aspect ratio commands and such, some stuff on my scaler is like a 5 or 6 button command to get to a somewhat used command and having to bring the menu up. If it wasn't for this I would probably be happy with just a good learning remote.
Thanks again

FWIW we've loads of universal remotes, and the only one my wife could get on with was the big old Marantz RC2000/2, because it had hard buttons for everything, and worked when you pressed the button, not a second afterwards.
We've now got a Home Theatre Master 650 which is brilliant. Everyone should try the MX-500, which is the best value. It's very easy to programme and operate: you have one hand on the remote, and you keep your eyes on the TV screen.

Papalek, shoot a line to both Curt and to Ray Cendroski. When I went trolling for a wireless remote for my 4200, both guys had a spare or two.

As an FYI, you don't have to set the MX-500 this way. Mine are set up in primarily "activity-based" layouts. There is no restriction as to how you set up the remote. Further, you have 10 devices, so you can have crazy "devices" to group things. For instance, I have a "power" device that just has the on off codes for all the devices in the room incase something doesn't come on or go off.
Only downside of the battery HTM is they do go through batteries (have to change them about 3 times per year).

Because the HTMs have so many hard buttons, you don't HAVE to navigate in and out of the component pages/menus to make simple commands. I don't recall if the MX500 works the same way, but I have our 650 running from the top menu most of the time. The navigation and channel buttons are used for the satellite receiver, numbers for TV channels, transport for the DVD player, volume for the amp, and power on is a macro for everything. It's pretty close to operating one device.

All the HTM remotes from the MX500 up work pretty much the same way.
Mine are a bit more "activity-based" then yours since I need the transport controls for the HD DVR, DVD player, or D-VHS depending upon which activity you are doing. But, I do have the soft keys with the lighting controls and sound processing modes on every single screen in the same place. So, much of that is always the same, but the other soft keys and the transport controls switch by activity.

Hi,
Whats the smallest learning remote available. Only need a couple of sources, IR only. I want one that you change the batteries on and it won't loose it's info. I have an one for all but on certain functions it double sends which makes it a bitch to do some areas of setup on my pj.

While not small, you can pick up a Home Theater Master MX-500 on eBay for around $50. These are great remotes that can be programmed with Macros to do most automation tasks. Their IR blaster are very strong, so they have no problem bouncing off the screen and up to the PJ. There buttons feel very good and are easy to use without engaing the back lighting. They keep their programming for a very long time when the batteries are removed.

Hi Dave,
I checked those mx500's out last night on ebay, they go for $80usd. The oneforall that I have works okay for most functions except those few key strokes. What I really want is the original remote.

Those are the new ones. I bought a used one for $45. I was lucky enough to get an original remote with mine, but as hard to come by as they are, I'm not parting with mine. I can program a remote and send it to you if you are missing any codes.

Only $1000? Damn you'd think there would be a few of those around by now to be had.

I just picked up a Pront TSU-2000 with a new rechargabe battery and base for $80.
The 2 big buttons on the bottom turn on the TV and the Stereo. Those are the only 2 components that are common to everythng. The LCD touch screen has Icons for the DVD, Sat, Digital Cable, and CD. When you hit one of those icons it changes the reciever input to the correct setting and gives you the controls for that device. Hard buttons on the side for volume always control the receiver, channel hard buttons change with the component you selected. Since there isn't an ALL OFF or ALL OFF macro you never wind up with the TV on and the Reciever off.
Its not quite as good as the dbaisey's, but my wife can run the system and so can my 5yr old son
